Nice model
Reminds me of my first train set.
Although I suspect yours is a little more authentic ![]()
Nothing wrong with your set, I got interested with my fathers Tri-ang TT model layout on the kitchen table when I was about 3 - 4 had the bug ever since ![]()
Thanks, yes this was a childhood Christmas present that got me interested. My dad then built a layout on a board that swung down from the wall (he was a carpenter by trade). Later I did get a bit obsessive with collecting and small layouts. Mostly Hornby tinplate O gauge but first I had to get one of every version of that first Transcontinental loco. Mostly all gone now but I still have that first set.
Dad’s have a lot to answer for and all in a good way. We were on holiday in Scarborough, and having a family walk round after tea when we came to a shop that had a Minitrix N gauge German outline train set in the window, this was probably the first time I had ever seen N gauge, but the seed was sown, Dad part exchanged the TT and we changed to N gauge. 60 years later I still have most of the first items bought, and although very crude by today’s standard, its something I couldn’t let go.
Yes, even at 70 years old, it’s a good memory to have.
A superb layout based in London around 1987
A huge amount of rolling stock and freight being pulled with 12 plus wagons as it should be.
As with all layouts its been a long work in progress. But I think its nearing completion now.
Everard Junction
Love the attention to detail ![]()
Superb.
Everhard Junction and Chadwick Parkway are two of the most inspiring YouTube model railway channels that I have found.
Both gentlemen are incredibly generous, sharing their knowledge freely with lesser mortals like me.
Kudos to both of them.
Best regards, BF
It’s a great layout Ian, of an interesting period. with a right mish - mash of liveries, I’m definitely a banger blue man ![]()
I enjoy Model Railway modelling at home as a winter occupation and have done for many years. I do not exhibit as my layouts are not portable but I have helped friends with their exhibition layouts and made the odd model for them. I prefer to just dabble and potter about on my layouts doing my thing. I have two small layouts one an OO GWR Edwardian Branchline called Chagford Castle Junction which is made up and not based on a real location (there is a Chagford on Dartmoor in Devon) and the second an HO US layout representing the Illinois Central Railroad in a rural location.
I enjoy making it up rather than trying to recreate a real location. It is freeing but it appeals to my creative side. It is quite popular to do in the US but perhaps not so much in the UK. On the GWR layout I also follow a US style method of having my own made up railway company called the Rodborough & Winstone Railway which co-exists with the GWR running dilapidated and 2nd hand stock bought from other railways painted in RWR corporate colours.
I’m impressed, two layouts! I’m ashamed to say I don’t have one…just a lot of stock, sitting round doing nothing.
I’ve always had an interest in the Settle & Carlisle, and if I had the room would model something similar to the late David Jenkinson’s Little Long Drag, at the end of steam.
I like yourself have an interest in the North American scene, mainly the Clinchfield hence the SD45, but thats dead in the water at the moment.
I do like the research aspect of modelling, and even acquiring the stock, its the cutting of wood, that I tend to fall down on, however, I’m in my last year at work, and finally getting a layout built is part of my retirement plan.
I didn’t say they were complete!
The GWR one is almost but the US layout is far from complete.
No modeler is good at everything which is a good reason to join a club and get help and advice from others. There are several base board building services out there or pre-cut kits that may help you get going.
A trait of us modellers is to have a stash of stuff that is far too large a friend of mine spends a lot of time helping widows sell deceased modellers collections much of which is often unopened and unused. The lesson for us all (me included) is not to dream of something in the future but get it done and enjoy as soon as possible.
Having said that there is always room for just one more boxcar! ![]()
Does a circle of Kato HO track count
I’m impressed ![]()
I don’t have (ahem) a train set, but some time ago YouTube decided that I might be interested in this guy building a layout…
5 years and multiple videos it still isn’t finished but I still invested in the project.
A mix of design, construction and of course trains as well as some random other stuff usually at the end of his videos.
Here is a relatively early video
S1 EP4 was him building the 12ft long 84in diameter wooden trestle bridge
RCGRABBAG
Lovely.
Thats impressive, thanks for sharing, you don’t need a lot of room to have your own layout… ![]()
I agree you do not need acres of space. It’s great if you have the drive and skills to build a large layout and you have the space but many people run out of steam (pun intended) when they hit snags or part of the build they do not enjoy that much like wiring for example. So starting at least with a small simple layout at first that can be completed or near enough so you can actually enjoy running trains is a good starting place and if you have the space you can always expand later.
For those like me that do not have a large space (I don’t fancy a loft layout) I have a 10X10 ft room for my study and model railway. My two layouts are sperate but on different levels GWR below and US layout above around the room but only about half has scenery the remainder having sidings acting as storage for operation. The GWR layout is an L shape though as originally it was going to be an exhibition model and has a fiddle yard one end.
Sound advice, regarding space and getting something running, rather than having nothing running, when basically you just become a collector, which is me at the moment.
Anyone interested and in the area, the Abingdon and District MRS is staging ‘Abrail’ at the Abingdon and Witney College in Abingdon this weekend.
I’ve not been to an exhibition in many, many years but this thread has encouraged me to go back into the water!
