I can’t remember how I came across this Sufi music, but it’s gripping. I recall now: a link from a Michael Brook album.
My favourite album by him. Tipped off by a friend as I recall.
An excellent album well worth tracking down on vinyl.
R3 Late Junction used to play Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Nitin Sawhney spoke about his singing. Sawhney chose Massive Attack’s remix of ‘Mustt Mustt’ as his favourite on Desert Island Disks.
This thread has made be look out and listen to Mustt Mustt CD again. Purchased in a sale bin at HMV many years ago and what stunningly emotive album it is. Beautifully recorded too.
I’m definitely listening to it with new appreciation.
Like many I suspect, my introduction to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was through Peter Gabriel’s Passion and Passion-Sources albums.
A little more recent are his vocals in PG’s Up album on the song Signal to Noise.
If you liked Mustt Must then I do strongly recommend Night Song; a Nusrat & Michael Brook collaboration. Track 3, Lament will give your woofers some work!
I was visiting old school friends today and got talking to another Naimite who is learning the oud. This is one of his recommendations.
