RO water is usually available from aquarium shops, particulrly those that deal in marine fish.
Alternatively, buy an RO filter. Probaly around the £50 mark.
Hope the link isnt breaking any rules but here for info.
What if you use bottled water,or purified drinking water,is that acceptable?
Most here would say no.
The grade 1 water that I use cost about £20 to clean and rinse 500 records, so I don’t think cost is an issue.
Distilled water is not found at every store though, you have to stand in a lineup to get into Walmart…which sucks.
Another Okki Nokki owner here.
I’ve been using water out of the dehumidifier which seems to work better then tap water. From my understanding, it’s distilled water…
with added dust but if it’s humid maybe not too much of that.
But not filtered, or stored cleanly.
Have found a supplier of ‘UltraPure water’ for sensible Purchase and delivery price.
Have also a friend who works in a Lab, who is going to provide some from their system, as Grade 1 UltraPure water, with TOC of less than 30ppb having gone through a 0.2um filter - will come in sterilised amber bottles sealed.
Class 2 lab water is probably good enough. It’s been through a charcoal bed, an RO membrane and an ion exchange bed after that. You’re going to add a wetting agent anyway.
I too use APC Pure Grade 1 Distilled water. I found that it was much better (much lower noise) than the regular de-ionised water you get from the chemist or from the garage.
Well I’m about to have to use commercial supplies as I’ll be retiring from the lab this summer so no more 18.2MΩ water. I have 5l of glass distilled arriving today as a first shot.
The Degritter doesn’t have the dire warnings about using anything but their own cleaner that Audiodesk has, they even tell you the water tank is OK for alcohol, not that I’d use any undiluted.
I just use one of these to create distilled water and clean LPs in an Audio desk ultrasonic cleaner.
Hello Badger1
Could you tell me a little more about the water distiller? Is it noisy and how long does it take to distill 4 litres. I’m a CPAP machine user and wondered if it might help, also will use it to clean records.
Thanks
Tim
Its on amazon and claims 3.5 hours for 4 litres, though no claims on purity other than distilled and condensed from steam.
Thanks will take a look.
Gazza has it right. I’ve used them for years as until recently I developed my own black and white film - distilled water is essential to reduce drying marks on the film. So it was natural to continue its use for LP cleaning. I suspect they pay for themselves quite quickly.
Last night I decided to look into the impurities present in various types of water.
I dropped various types of water onto a CD, left it for 24 hrs and compaired the deposits left on the CD after evaporation.
12 O’clock is the orange earplug, as is De-ironised water.
3 O’clock is tap water.
6 O’clock is water from my de-humidifier.
9 O’clock is bottled springwater (asda).
De-ironised water clearly left least deposits.
Tap water clearly left most deposits.
And in between is de-humidified and bottled springwater.
I use a Degritter. Great machine. Really easy to use and not too bulky to store. I’ve cleaned about 50LPs on mine so far. I use APC distilled water in it.
