There’s a whole story attached to this which is told in the Rega book. IIRC, and I may be getting some details wrong, but after some difficulties sourcing good drives reliably they found some guys who were working on a new design and looking for applications, so were interested in supplying even a small outfit like Rega. Then this supplier company changed owners somehow and the new owner had no interest, but somehow (with considerable luck involved), Rega was offered the whole produced stock. They might not have been able to buy at others times, but they had just had a good run and bought the whole lot of something-thousand drives.
