Rega P8 cabling

The Rega P8 I bought has a cable that looks quite cheap, flimsy and with cheap connectors. A friend of mine has a Planer 8 and it has a completely different cable that looks much more expensive. How does it look for those of you who own a Rega P8, do you also have the simpler cablings?

Hi Bjorn
This is what mine look like. There is writing on the cable.

Looks like the same one my friend has on his Planer8. When did you buy your P8?

I’ve had it a few years, can’t remember exactly, maybe 4 year or so?

Are yours different? How old is yours?

The cable from my RB880 on my LP12 looks the same as @carruthersesq Bjorn.
That’s the same tone arm as on the P8. My LP12 was built in June 2021 complete with RB880/Apheta 3.
Seems strange that your cable would be different🤔

I forgot to mention I’ve swapped the RB880 for an RB2000, however if I remember correctly it was the same cable, it certainly looked like the same cable.

Cable still seems to be very similar if not the same…:man_shrugging:t2:

Brand new. Apparently they changed the cable and connectors to simpler ones. Sad :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Seems strange that they might go backwards on cable tech with an established product.
I wonder why they’ve done that…

My former P8 had the locking RCA connectors whereas my P10 has the simpler, non-locking versions. The former were prone to creating a bit of hum if not tightened/positioned 100% correctly, so I actually prefer the simpler ones.

Didn’t you buy an edition of some sort with lower price? Maybe the make to order for some distributors for campaigns making minor adjustments to cut cost? :man_shrugging:

Ive got the locking RCAs on my rb3000. When undoing then, the outer aluminium bit always falls behind the rack. Annoying !

Not entirely uncommon in industry as an alternative to raising the price when materials and overhead costs increase.

I don’t think that’s the reason Blackbird, I’ve seen another brand new P8 with the same wiring as mine and it was bought for regular price. However, it would be interesting to know when in time they changed.

I suppose this is an example where being accurate with the model name is useful.

The latest Rega model is a Plannar 8 the previous model was an RP8.

The OP said he had a P8 but a friend’s Planar 8 was different and subjectively at least better.

So, if this description is correct then it is not a matter of Rega making the latest with cost-saving materials but one of Rega improving materials in the newer model.

Yes, but now it is proven, see above, that Rega has changed the P8 cabling during its lifetime, which is what my question was about.

I have no doubt that all kinds of things have been changed over time that is not what I was saying.

Do you have an older model or did you buy a new Planar P8?

New

OK that makes a difference, thank you. It was just that is not how your OP reads with how Rega names it’s TT range.

The power supply etc has changed in the last year or so this may have involved a different cable too, not sure.

Do you mean the power cable or the phono/RCA cables going to the amp?

If they’re like Naim then any cheap interconnect will do as long as Rega have laid their hands on it and said APPROVED
