doesn’t matter if the cable is flimsy as long it has low capacity and is soldered as it should be.
Those are Rean connectors, part of the Neutrik, not the fanciest, but very effective.
@Bjorn The ones pictured above are Rean plugs.
These ones? Apparently they were the ones that were on the Rega P8 when it was introduced.
If you buy a new Rega P8 today, which I did, they are replaced with these plastic ones.
Those Rean ones look a lot less of a pain to plug in than the older ones, which remind me of WBT plugs.
Don’t judge the performance of a connector by the looks though.
I know Blackbird, but I can’t help but wonder how it would have sounded if they hadn’t replaced the cable and connectors with an obvious cheaper alternative
My P10 is the first I’d seen with the “downgraded” connectors, having set up several P8 and P10 with the locking connectors. A bit annoying, but I don’t know that it affects sound quality. Haven’t A/B’d an older P10 with locking to mine though.
I’m not sure the actual cable changed from earlier P8/P10
Yes, those are Rean.
It seems to be a different material in the cable too, the new one is much softer and more rubber-like. Good, bad or equal? I don’t know
New
Old
Those big honking locking connectors certainly don’t look like something I’d want on my phono cables. I’d be glad to have the Reane.
And frankly, I don’t see any reason to assume that flimsier cable would necessarily be a downgrade. We aren’t carrying high currents over significant distance here, it’s on the order of a few mv at most across 5 feet or so.
I hope you are right
The photos look like the two cables have a different levels of sheen and a different type face.
I asked the same question you’re asking back in March when I got my P10, you can search the forum and find my post…I still haven’t gotten around to asking Sound Org why the change and if there’s any substance to it.
I was in the same boat. Feeling a bit cheated not getting the locking connectors. Same cable as the P3 now seems like an odd place to save a couple bucks, agree. But still sounds great. It’s the Couole 3 cable I think.
I’ve had a quick look at my P8 and it also has the locking connectors. To be honest, I always find these a struggle to connect …
