Rega planar 2

Hi Folks

Hope all is well.

I went to a flea market yesterday and picked up a 1990 rega planar 2. It was sold as not working and under close inspection I found that the power lead had a soldering issue. I cleaned and soldered the power lead back and like magic it works perfectly no issues whatsoever. In my summary on this forum is a collection of amps I own intriguingly which one will suit or match with the turntable curiosity has the better of me

Regards
Anthony

If you want a genuine design of amp contempory with the early planar then a A&R Cambridge A60 would fit the bill.

However in Naim terms a Nait of any flavour but a Nait 2 if you could find one would be great. A Nait 1 would be easier to find and cheaper too or a Nait 3.

If choosing from your list the Nait 3 is my choice.

According to your profile you seem to own a Nait 1, Nait 3, 92/90 Flatcap and a Cyrus 1.

A 92/90 is basically a Nait 3 split into two boxes so sound wise wouldn’t be much different to the Nait 3.

At the time a Rega Planar 2 was often partnered with all of your amps. The Cyrus 1 was considered an entry level amp whereas the Naims were mid level. You just need to make sure your chosen cartridge matches the phono boards/stage that you use (if I remember correctly the Nait 3 and 92 didn’t come with phono boards and they were an optional extra. If your amps haven’t got them you will probably just need the ones that work with MM cartridges).

Well you need a cartridge first, likely a fresh new one.
I’d get a new belt too.
Amp with phonostage will work.

Oh wow, this is the first time a member of any audio forum has mentioned the A&R Cambridge A60, and very seldom has it come up for sale on the used audio market. It was one of the great ones I had the opportunity to audion back then.

I remember the amp well a friend of mine had one as part of his first proper HiFi system with a Rega Planar 3 back when I worked a Saturday job as a teenager in a local HiFi shop. The combo sounded really good.

Happy memories here of my mid eighties Rega Planar 3 and Linn K9 into my A&R A60 and small Celefs. First proper stereo. There was some QED79 strand too.
