Rega Saturn III as a standalone DAC

Calling all Rega Saturn III users

I am looking to audition this machine over the coming week. From as much as I can tell from the reviews and user comments I am going to love this machine for playing CD’s. But also important to me is the Saturn as a standalone DAC. So my question can the Saturn DAC (with the right digital source) produce a similar sound quality compared to CD playback? The standalone DAC bit is as important to me as the CD playback. Be great to hear how people are actually using this machine.

To describe my musical listening taste, timing and energy comes first. Of course I love a nice 3d dimensional sound stage with lots of detail, inky blackness etc etc but if the music doesn’t grab me, sound cohesive or if the musicians sound like they’ve had too much of the sleepy tea then I loose interest right away. So I guess I’m a music first hifi second sort of man

At the moment I’m running an Atom HE as a front end which I’ll be looking to replace. It’s a nice sounding piece of kit but too temperamental for me. My mains supply isn’t the best and the SQ varies too much for my liking.

The rest of my kit, Buchardt S400 II speakers, a range of power amps from Class D Orchard Audio Starkrimson to Avondale NCC300’s. And if I go down the Saturn route I will be using a NAC42.5 pre and to start with a iFi Zen streamer. Oh and an Airlink Balanced power conditioner which I should be receiving next week.
