REL Connection for Active Speakers

Howdy!

Since upgrading to active speakers, I’m no longer able to use the high level input on my REL, leaving me with just the low level input and one spare 4pin DIN output on my HiCap (socket 1).

My assumption is, I would only connect the right channel and ground in the DIN, corresponding to the signal and ground in the RCA connector (identical to my DIN-RCA cable for my right speaker), correct?

Is there any other way of connecting the T5/X?

Any leads that you use must be of a very low capacitance and will need to be slugged with a 100r resistor on each lead, otherwise your power supply will become unstable.

Does this apply to subwoofer cables only or is it a must for active speaker cables as well? Mine, currently do not have any resistors added in as far as I know.

Only for the subwoofer i think, Those with experience of active speakers might say otherwise though.

If you connect to only the right channel, bass from the left will not get to the sub.

I’m not sure about the active leads, but long leads are long leads, so if you take the signal from the Hicap they almost certainly should be slugged. Best check with Naim support before spending money though.

There’s loads on the forum already. The last I remember was 100R recommended over 3m and mandatory over 5m.

Well, I left a message with Naim customer support last week but haven’t got anything back from them yet. My cables guy awaits for me to confirm the final design (resitor added or not) but I can’t really find definitive information that applies to my current setup.

Ummm, do you have two subs? Otherwise, if that is a single sub, it will need a stereo cable to carry information for both left and right channels. The sub should have a stereo input. It’s basically just a long DIN-RCA stereo interconnect that is screened in the case of a sub lead but is certainly otherwise a normal interconnect.

Even with two subs and mono lead to each one, it will generally be simpler to have both leads end up in the same DIN at the power supply end.

Even without confirmation, I don’t think you can wrong with a 100R slug. Remember, the sub is just another endpoint from the view of the amp. It doesn’t know whether it is a power amp, a sub, or active speaker. The requirements, other than the screen used for sub leads, is basically the same.

His sub has a single RCA input for low level connection, so he needs a mono cable.

Well then sum resistors are mandatory to safely merge left and right signals to mono anyway without damaging the preamp.

This isn’t an official support forum though Naim do sometimes drop by. You need to actually keep pressing for them to respond to your support ticket raised by email.

The T/5X is a very nice subwoofer. However, as you’ve discovered, the REL T series has only a single low-level input.

Solutions

  1. Connect only the left or right channel to the subwoofer. Not recommended because bass is not completely mono, especially with subwoofers that have gentle roll-off filters, like RELs.
  2. Run dual subwoofers by getting another T/5X (one for the left channel and one for the right channel).
  3. Trade it in for a subwoofer model that has dual low-level inputs (If sticking with REL, that means Series S or the Reference line, though these are much larger and more expensive than the T/5X)
  4. Sum the left and right signals with a resistor-based summing circuit
  5. Sum the left and right signals with an unbalanced, line-level stereo to mono transformer. However, I took a very brief look and couldn’t find any commercial, audiophile-quality examples (I didn’t look for DIY transformers, only commercial, plug-n-play products)

I would personally favor #2 if feasible. You’ll get several bonus benefits

  • Smoother bass response throughout your room
  • More effortless bass (Two subwoofers will each work less hard than a single subwoofer. Plus you’ll have twice as much air-movement capability per the doubled up driver cone surface area)
  • Improved sound stage (Assuming the subwoofers are located on the left and right sides of the room)

Else #4.

Or #5 if any suitable products exist. If you find one, check the frequency response spec to make sure that it can handle the frequency range of the subwoofer)

Absolutely. This is really the one area where quality beats quantity is simply not true. Those benefits in terms of even room response and scale are usually to such a degree that two lesser subs easily can outshine a single better sub.

It avoids much of the node/null pockets and consequently also allows for simpler positioning. Though it is twice as hard to dial in. To me the dial in is far less onerous than trying to position a single sub.

More than 10 days have lapsed and I have no reply from neither Naim or REL support, nor a consensus here.

Did you at least get an automated response from Naim support with a support case number? If not, then it is likely your request went to outer space.

I have ATC 40A. I have found no inexpensive way to do this. My T+A DAC 200’s analog preamp is truly fully balanced. Although it has both RCA and XLR analog outputs because the balanced outputs are needed for my ATC’s and I can’t run both sets simultaneously. So far the only really good solution is to buy an ATC C4 mk2 subwoofer because it has Balanced XLR inputs and outputs and lots of adjustment for crossover Etc Only issue is the cost , $6000. In the US! I think this will be my big audio upgrade for 2027 :grin:
