Rel S812s into Naim and Home Theatre system

I have resolved the hum on one Rel 812 sub woofer. The slight hum was only present when I installed a LFE cable to handle surround speakers on Home Theatre.

I used a phono ground lead from ground chassis on Anthem MRX1120 to Rel 812 rear panel outer screw. The outer screws need to be undone by a specialised bit which I had in my handy ratchet screwdriver bit set!

Rel 812 no. 2 is being sorted. Ordered longer cable. I have gleaned information from this forum and on Rel videos to resolve the issue.

This is how I attached it to Rel 812:

Note, I had no issues on high level connection with hum. This may be of use to those who want to use LFE and get hum. If your AV amp doesn’t have chassis ground you can undo a transit screw from rear of case and attach it to the casework.

Hope this helps!

System sounds absolutely devilish! :smiling_face_with_horns:

Loving the bass and soundstage which is so wide. Things will never be the same again.

Fortunately I have no neighbours on side where system is as they moved out. We are detached but even so!

Nice solution Dan. Glad it is all straightened out (or ‘sorted’ as you guys say)!

I have the ground wire on both Rels now. So have LFE and high connection. Was watching Wonder Woman and the bass on the war scenes was spectacular in Dolby Atmos. Really benefitting from listening to main Naim system and Home Theatre system which is what I wanted.

The grounding has improved things to where I want them to be. It was a minor issue. But if I listen closely there is some noise with everything turned down. Like with many electronics when off there isn’t silence as such.

But an improvement.

Some of the sound effects watching a movie are now spectacular.

It felt like you were there! My surround system is alright and is good enough for me overall. It’s not my main consideration.

The Rel 812s are great bits if kit. Look forward to more stories from others!

I think I just must be lucky. No hum at all from my RELs that are connected both high and low level.

Also never any real hum from my naim kit. I can hear the 300ps if I stick my ear near enough, but that’s it.

I also have high voltage (253 at last check) and no dedicated spur for the hifi.

Maybe it’s positive karma for the amount of times I’ve stubbed toe?

The dealer I use in Melbourne did not have a REL Carbon Special in stock so its coming from the distributor to the dealer this week and then it will be shipped to me in Perth, so I won’t get it till the middle of next week at the earliest.
Hopefully will be able to set it all up the weekend of 17th October.
Not too bad as no rush and I also ordered a 5m Mogami High Level Cable from Designacable in the UK as I did not want 5m spare cable sitting behind my AV Rack and Dan and others have advised the Mogami Cable is far superior to the REL 10m Cable that comes with the Subwoofer. The Mogami cable is now in Oz so I should get that delivered this week.
I already have a Chord Epic RCA LFE Subwoofer Cable on my existing Subwoofer so will be re-using that with the REL.
Looking forward to setting it all up and testing it out after which I will post an update on how its sounding.

I am looking forward to seeing your installation and updated pics. The Mogami cable is really good and about 4 times the thickness of Rel standard cable.

My LFE cable is also Mogami. I bought cheap ground leads which have given a 50% improvement. It wasn’t too bad before. But with cheap leads at around £12 for the two it has taken the edge off more. Tbf I think it’s just the air noise of the amps in the Subwoofers as it’s there with all cables taken out. The noise increases with cables in. I can get obsessed about things like this. But then I take a step back. The ground wires have made an improvement.

I will consider higher spec ground leads in the future. Anyone have any suggestions?

But grounding is something to consider.

The subwoofers are really meaty sounding and will transform your system beyond belief!

Very addictive!

Excited for you! Keep me updated!

Here’s mine…

Single Rel 510. Connected to the speaker terminals on the Olive 250 amp using Rel Bassline Blue for Naim cable. Zero hum and sound quality excellent.

I’m not gonna get hung up on hum noise. It’s less than transformer hum from my 552PS and 500PS which are plugged into Puritan 156 which reduced hum by 90%. We are talking you can only hear a slight noise with ear butted to sub woofer! So minimal now.

Nice speakers!

I have my current Velodyne Subwoofer, which is set up for movies only, set at a 60Hz crossover as my main Focal Electra 1038 BE speakers go down to an in room professionally measured 33Hz and this set up has worked very well, noting that THX certification for movies recommends a crossover of 80Hz.
The RELs only have one crossover adjuster so needs to be set to cover both movies and music.
Like you my main priority will be setting up for music, so based on that, what crossover setting do you have for your Focal Sopra No.2’s and have you played around with the crossover settings to find an optimum setting for the sound you like best?

Also curious what other people have set their REL crossovers to?

For the Quad 2805s seen above and given that i am in a small room i set the subwoofer very low. In my old house (even smaller room) my dealer installed them and we settled on crossover all the way down and volume at 3 clicks. In this new room i have settled on crossover 1 click amd volume 4 clicks. My aim is perfect integration with the Quads across all kinds of music.

Hello friends - the crossover on my RELs is currently set at 7 clicks and the volume at 13 clicks. I am still making small adjustments every so often but I think this is pretty close to perfect with my Sopra 2s in a large room.

I have mine set fairly low for music as the 606s deliver decent bass already, they really kick in when needed though. 4 clicks for crossover and 5 for the high level volume. Mind you I have a stereo pair so it would be higher if I only had one.

The crossover for cinema LFE is set in the Marantz receiver settings and is still at whatever level was recommended by the audyssey calibration programme.

The REL crossover setting is only related to the hi/low level signal of the main speakers. It doesn’t affect the .1/LFE input. Only the gain can be adjusted independently for this.

My levels are as follows on Rel 812s.

9 o’clock crossover.
12 o’clock for high level and LFE.

I like bass!

If you are having it low then why not buy a smaller sub woofer?

Just thoughts. I think my levels I are tad too high tbf. But it’s new kit and I listen to a lot of techno and drum n bass. So for me levels are good. When I listen to relaxing music such as Steely Dan and Pink Flloyd it sounds great also.

The Rel S812 delivers 800 watts if you are only turning it up to 9 oclock then my point is get a lower powered one.

Maybe I am completely wrong.

Interested to know your thoughts out there!

Things are pretty well resolved here now. The Rel’s have cost me alot of money. With cables and all. So let’s say I have spent £4.8k all in. Was it worth it? Yes. Better than box upgrade? Yes (although I cannot upgrade boxes unless I change from 500DR series).

What will I do next? Maybe Gryphon Diablo 333!

The higher end Rel’s provide better sound quality, not just loudness. The smaller ones won’t sound as good.

14 crossover and 7 gain ( I use a stereo pair which doubles the output so apparently you have to have to half the gain after setting them up individually)

I suspect an absolute expert could dial them in better but I think I’m on it or very close as the sound “collapses” when I turn them off!

As requested, a photo of the REL Carbon Special installed in my Main System in my Lounge Room.

I’ve spent the last 3 days setting the REL up for both Music (my main reason for getting the REL) and Movies with the added benefit for 5.1 Music.

STEREO MUSIC

The REL is connected to my Lumin Stereo Power Amp using a Mogami Hi-Level Connection Cable (which as Dan advised is far superior and with much bigger conductors that the REL cable that comes in the box) and no hum detected with all equipment switched on in idle mode.

I used my Tidal Playlist which I use for Music Equipment Demo’s and also compared Tidal to the CD and Hi-Res Blu-ray discs I have of the same tracks and found I did not need any further tweaks to the Subwoofer settings between the three sources, with the CD’s and Blu-ray’s sounding just that little bit better than the Tidal CD and Hi-Res Quality Tracks.

The tracks were previously chosen for good bass lines, deep bass and fast bass to test HiFi Gear so well suited to the task of setting up the Subwoofer.

I had been reading quite a few articles online about setting up a Subwoofer for Music, and quite a few suggested setting the crossover at 10Hz above the Main Speakers bass performance, so based on that I initially set the REL crossover to 50Hz as my Focal Electra 1038Be’s go down to 33Hz. With the REL crossover dial; 20Hz = 7 O-Clock and 120Hz = 5 O-Clock so 12 O-Clock is 70Hz therefore 50Hz was at 10 O-Clock.

From this point I adjusted the Gain dial to tune in the Subwoofer and I found an optimum setting of 1030 O-Clock, which I felt was about 85-90% perfect. The next day I re-ran all the listening tests with the crossover reduced to 45Hz = 9.30 O-Clock and found the bass was improved with a cleaner, more defined and more articulate bass sound, which indicated the setting was more integrated with the bass performance of my Main Speakers and based on this I increased the Gain to 11 O-Clock which sounded excellent and felt that it’s now about 90-95% perfect.

I will leave the settings now for a few weeks to listen more and allow for the Subwoofer to fully break-in, but, it’s a HUGE overall improvement to my Stereo System’s sound quality performance.

Tidal Tracks Used Were:
The Cure - A Forest
Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder
The Beatles - Come Together (2019 Mix)
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Amy Winehouse - Rehab
Sting - Brand New Day (My Songs Version)
Sting - Desert Rose (My Songs Version)
The Rolling Stones - Terrifying (2009 Remaster)
The Rolling Stones - Mixed Emotions (2009 Remaster)
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing
Seal - Crazy
Seal - Killer
Underworld - Born Slippy (Nuxx)
David Guttea featuring Kid Cudi - Memories Extended Version

Safri Duo - Samb-Adagio

MOVIES
For movies, I connected the REL to my Denon AVR-X4700H AV Amp (Subwoofer Crossover set to 80Hz in the Denon which is the Dolby and THX recommended crossover setting for Movies) using my existing Chord Epic RCA LFE Subwoofer Cable (again no hum from the REL in idle mode with all equipment switched on) into the LFE/.1 connection on the REL and chose four 4K Blu-ray movies with deep bass, fast bass and general action movie bass soundtracks:
Interstellar
U-571
Black Hawk Down
Terminator 2

Listened to the movies and then selected various action scene’s from the movies and dialed in the LFE.1 Gain, which resulted in a setting of 9 O-Clock, which I found optimum for serious but not too over the top bass presence across all movies.

5.1 MUSIC

The final set of tests, once the Music and Movies had been set up was to test to see how 5.1 Music response performed and I listened to the following Blu-ray concerts:
Roger Waters - This Is Not A Drill
Eric Clapton - Slowhand at 70
The Eagles - Live From The Forum MMXVIII

The sound quality performance on all three concerts was fantastic, due I think from spending so much time setting up the Music and Movies settings very well, so no need to make any further adjustments to the REL.

In summary, the REL is awesome and has made a massive improvement to the sound quality of my stereo and surround sound systems, I’m seriously very impressed and would highly recommend one.

I re-purposed my old Velodyne SPL-1200R Subwoofer into my Study Stereo System and have it connected using Chord Shawline RCA interconnects to the Subwoofer output of my Supernait 3.
I’ve set the crossover at 50Hz which is 10Hz above the bass performance of my Dynaudio Audience 72SE Speakers, it has also made a HUGE improvement to that system, but needs some fine tuning to get it set up perfectly in that room and system:
