Replacement Cartridge

Hi
First posting, so hope I get this right.

I want to replace my Dynavector DVX2 cartridge with the same model. I don’t know whether the current one is High or Low output as there is no indication on the cartridge itself. My hi fi is all Naim, the phono stage is a Stageline (N stecilled on back so assume it’s an N variant), fitted in a Riga P5 turntable, playing through Shahinian Obelisk speakers. Can anyone advise me, do I need a Hi or Low output cartridge?

Welcome George.

If you’re using your current cart with a Stageline N (MM) then it’s most likely it’s a High Output version.

George, If your cartridge looks like this image which I found on the net and guessed at from your description:

…it is the high output type to match your Stageline N.

Best,
C.

The low output one looks this. The DV logo is red with ‘low’ on it, however in that case it will be matched with a Stageline S or other suitable MC phono stage.

Unless your cartridge is a XX2, your description doesn’t clearly identify it.

Either way I understand that if the DV logo is black then it is high output and if its red its low output. I hope this is of help.

The absolute giveaway that identifies the Low from the High is that the Low has Low printed below the the DV on the front of the cart, the High has nothing printed below the DV on the front.

In the UK, Dynavector offers a 20% trade-in discount if you replace your current cartridge with another Dynavector, which is a nice bonus.

Thanks Richard, thatsl’s very helpful.

Thanks Christopher, that’s my present cartridge exactly.

Thanks Martin. Logo is black, it’s a High output.

Thanks, that means it’s Hig output.

Thanks a lot for this Paul. I didn’t know that, you’re right, it would be a very nice bonus.

Yes the trade in discount is a nice touch. I was glad of it when my 6 month old DV20X2L was trashed by a visiting child.

But the way, out of interest, I haven’t used a Stageline and was using my 32.5 until I got a very nice used DV P75 phono amp and my, I was astonished with the improvement! My rational was that the P75 is designed to optimise DV cartridges so it made sense to me. I’m not saying that the P75 is the best out there but for the price it is remarkable. The best single upgrade I have made, for my system anyway. :slightly_smiling_face:

Don’t under-estimate the contribution of the phono stage
And the cable that connects it to your pre-amp. The information lost from the cartridge at this interface can be massive imo…

Yes indeed. I use an old Chord Cobra II that I had laying around. I reckon it’s doing a pretty fine job. :slightly_smiling_face:
