Just came home from a bit of travelling so haven’t had a chance to listen to my hi-fi for a close on a month. When I sat down yesterday, I was amazed by just how good music sounded. I had been using head phones and my A&K player - which always sounds good to me. Just not in the same league as a proper system. The space in the recording and the silences were the standouts for me. Sat there for a while jumping through some favourite tracks and enjoying the moment.
This has me thinking about how we get used to and then pretty much take for granted how good our systems are, it takes a break to make you appreciate the difference. Just a few tracks in yesterday had me thinking did it always sound like this, I assume it does and that I just accept that is how things should sound.
Makes me wonder if the next time I feel like an upgrade I should spend the money on a holiday and come back to appreciate what I have already.
I’ve often felt the same when I’ve been away for a few weeks. Holidays and other trips away may well be the panacea for upgraditis!
Definitely the same for me, even with just a few days away from my system. Odd isn’t it. A lovely feeling though ![]()
Yes, recently had a few days away and used the Dragonfly with phones on the iPhone, Radio 3 wasn’t bad at all, but then came home Jeff Beck and then Miles on the Xerxes ![]()
Just been away for 3 weeks with system shut down. Powered up 10am next morning, played a record at 5pm and was just amazed at the sound. As has already been said it’s certainly a cure for upgraditis. ( for a while anyway ! )
Another option if you are not going away anywhere, is to put on something that you haven’t listened to for a long time. Though probably only works best with LP and CD.
I’m sure we all have albums hidden away not getting spin time. It happens every time I play any such LPs for the first time after I got my DV P75!
It definatley helps to ward off Upgraditis ![]()
I also find the initial listen the next day (after a warm up) sounds great too. But
after a few hours listening at moderate/highish volumes these old ears of mine can become a bit ‘saturated’, if you know what I mean.
But, do you know what, after say an hour’s break, it all sounds fabulous again.
So true!
As your eyes (brain) can become tired from reading too long, or too much screen time, so too can your ears (brain) become tired from listening for lengthy periods.
I think this can be particularly true during critical listening to highly resolving systems. It is as if your ears/brain become over-stimulated. Just my humble opinion.
However the recovery time can be measured in hours rather than days/weeks e.g. post holidays. Again my humble opinion.
A break can be as good as a change. We all should think about this occasionally.
I’ve been travelling for two weeks now listening to a playlist on USB in the hire car. I’ve managed to pick up a number of CDs during my travels and looking forward to getting home Saturday evening, a few quick rips, a glass of wine and then listen to the system. Sat on the sofa with the music walking over me. What a welcome home.
Ideal way to hear your system with wine and some new CDs. Hope it sounds better than you remember ![]()
I used to work away in the nine realms for nigh on twenty millennia for five days at a time. There was very little upgrading during that time. Such duties have been passed on to lesser immortals, and the system has changed beyond recognition in the last five years. More fulsome coffers may have something to do with that too!
Another phenomenon of similar ilk, is when we listen to a track in the chariot and then play the same one at home. We have really good chariot systems, but boy do the tracks come alive in the listening hall!
Six months back I had to take my Naim 252/SC/300/PS to the Spanish Naim dealer due to noise emitting from the system speakers without any music being played. It turned out to be a faulty Burndy cable. This has been replaced and I was able to pick up the components just before we had to head to the UK a few week back.
So my plan is to listen to the current system using Nait 50 for a few days so that I get my ear tuned in, before reinstalling the 252/SC/300/PS. That way I hope to be able to better hear the uplift from the Nait 50. I will report the difference in the Nait 50 thread later next week.
