Roon 1.8

Hi.
I am seeing lots of long wait times for data - usually when navigating to discography and also when opening the app. Have attached a picture of an odd occurrence when trying to navigate to the artist discography for Nancy Sinatra that went away once I added the album to my library. Presumably the Roon servers getting hammered?

Also, has the “new for you” section from the Home Screen disappeared? I liked that you used to also see new releases from tidal and Qobuz on your home page but they now only appear in the individual service tabs.

Home Screen is a hot mess tbh…

Yes the metadata servers are still struggling because everyone is clicking through views instead of listening to music

And funny, I was looking at the same Nancy Sinatra page a bit earlier

From my limited understanding Roon caches all these discographies and you’re the first to “ask” for Nancy’s. It is almost instantaneous for me because Roon now has it cached. It was loading slowly for you so you got the default “time out” message.

Nope, I looked it up an hour or two ago

Overview for Nancy

What a shambles. Not been the best 12 months for updates with Naims firmware shenanigans and not this.

They did? With the 5 emails, the announcement on the forum, and the reviews appearing shortly before the emails, it looked to me like the staging was planned

It’s surely because everyone is checking out the views all the time, that must be multiple times the normal metadata server load. It will settle down. We could all contribute by listening to some music instead

Almost instantaneous for me.

I’m presuming you have all ticked the “speed discography download” setting?

Where are you? Maybe they have distributed content delivery servers and not all are under the same load

The Emerald Isle.

I think the press leaks didn’t help with pressuring for a release today. The CTO has said releases are usually targeted for a Tuesday but might go to a Wednesday or Thursday to allow for some final attention.

I had that too - restarted Core and that helped to an extent.

Germany. Dunno about Johnmorris67, not in profile

Surely they wouldn’t, but were there leaks? Is this confirmed? It totally didn’t look to me like unauthorized reviews before the embargo period ended, just like normal publication, then the emails started.

(Though TBH I don’t know why RL would let their hand be forced if they thought it’s not ready. People on the forum would understand, others wouldn’t know)

I had to restart my Core, clear caches and restart my iPhone in order for my iPhone not to crash every 2 mins. All is good now.

Yeah, not clear. “Leaks” is probably the wrong term. Language matters  “Targeting by” vs “Releasing on” can help give some room, for example.

They had a soft date of the 9th apparently. I don’t know what to believe though. The time we were on the beta was too short and we spotted lots of issues, that everyone is now moaning about yet they still went ahead. It should still not grind to a halt in any situation regardless of how many users are accessing it.

The beta programme needs extending out to more users all the time as I have no idea how the amount of issues we all spotted in a small space of time got missed before. Naim seemed to have learnt to get more users to test and we all help spot more things before it gets out reason why it’s not out yet. Some will obviously be missed but currently the amount of display issues , UI bits missing or not working as they should is unacceptable given the UI is the biggest part of this update. And dont get me started on things they should have added and it’s missed opportunities. Hoping 1.8.1 solves some.

I see, thanks. Yes, language matters  Though I read all the reviews and if it hadn’t arrived would have looked on the forum. If I had found a post saying that they are delaying it to iron out issues, I wouldn’t have blinked. Whatever, I’m a lifer

I see. Sure that could have been handled better then, who cares when exactly it comes out. But surely it would be RL’s decision, I don’t know why supposed leaks would force them.

I don’t have a problem with performance on release day. They may have their reasons for why they can’t spin up additional Amazon instances or whatever, and I prefer if they don’t invest the money in hardware that is idle on 364 days of the year. That’s really a minor thing IMO

I haven’t ripped anything yet with complicated artist credit edits, but seems to me some things about my pet peeve are improved, e.g. it seems to accept artist merges whenever I say so (even for artists where it makes no sense), and not refuse it for no obvious reason like 1.7 did

I don’t recall seeing an explicit date from Roon, but the email countdown implied a release when taken with the press reviews. All roads lead to RL. Lots of good data for them to work with from this release, I’m sure. And, in context, the “issues” we’re discussing are extremely first-world, imho.
