There’s a Roon update coming tomorrow and it will cause some issues for people with older Macs, QNAP NAS, and proprietary high-end music servers (such as Grimm, Silent Angel, Innuos, Melco, Mytek, Antipodes, Primecore, and many more). According to Stereo Guide

Interesting. I have a nucleus so should be fine, but I’m curious as to why the update will affect some hardware.

While I enjoyed Roon annual subscriptions for several years it wasn’t essential but a couple of years ago after a version update the memory footprint required became so high it just wasn’t feasible to use it on my M1 Mac Mini which had less memory than the previous Intel Mac. Doesn’t sound like the issue here.
Newer specs are inevitably required for many apps due to security issues but sometimes newer versions just lock out older functionality/compatibility which is a shsme.

They are actually reducing memory usage/pressure as well as better controlling background CPU activity.
Big thread on their own forum discussing it in depth.
They are having to discard some legacy code to thin stuff out…so it’s time for others to update some things. I’m running a highly optimized Nucleus Titan, so this shouldn’t effect me too much either way. 64GB of Apacer Industrial wide-temp RAM will afford one such privileges.

Interesting, nice to know they’re optimising it resource wise.
Sadly it’s reality that legacy hardware needs to have support removed in so many instances these days, primarily for security.
Roon is an excellent product, I just didn’t find it was essential for me. I’ll almost certainly revisit it in coming years at some stage but am more than happy with Audirvana for now.

There going to be a series of releases that the devs are stating will have step-change improvement in memory pressure, overall usage, usage-over-time/leaks, and CPU activity outside of scheduled maintenance windows. The big initial release is tomorrow (4/20/26). But there will be additional improvements at the code level in subsequent releases.
If I were you (and I am not), I wouldn’t touch this release, but wait to see how these all settle in a few months before you dip your toe back in. Audirvana remains a great solution and you may still prefer it even after the Roon improvements. It’s all about the music, after all.

The guidance is quite clear that the issues may occur for Roon running as Server. I assume most of us use Roon Rock on a NUC and I understand no issues expected there

@AndyR just based on the numerous threads I have been reading on the forum over the last years, Andy. Absolutely not sure of course, but my strong gut feel
I’m running ROCK on a NUC8i7 I built years ago, so the update won’t be a problem for me. I run the Roon controller on M2 MacBook Air and M4 Pro Mac Mini.

I think there are quite a lot of people here that use a Roon Nucleus, which is essentially ROCK running on a NUC.

Well, maybe. I think my issue is with ‘assume’ and ‘most’.
I actually suspect ‘most’ Roon users keep their heads down, being fed up being told it adds no value and/or it sounds worse…

Innuos have confirmed on their Community Forum that they are not affected - their libraries and Open SSL meet the requirements. Fingers crossed!

When I bought my Weiss DAC it included a 3-month trial of Audirvana. It tried it for a few days before going back to Roon. I just didn’t like the UI/UX. I’m happy with using Roon. The user experience has yet to be matched by anything else, as far as I’m concerned.
