Roon update tomorrow

They’d stream from Qobuz via the internet as they do if you play from the Purchases or Purchased section in The Naim app or Audirvana - simply a list of things I’ve purchased with the ability to stream them from the internet. My understanding is that the Qobuz API allows an app to get lists of favourites, playlists and purchases. You would then be able to play purchases from the internet in the same way that I play favourites I’ve not actually purchased.

Appreciate a Nucleus works well for many but I don’t really want one, I’ll potentially dedicate a Mac Mini for Roon Audirvana and/or Roon server duties in the not too distant future.

I’m not that keen on tagging things manually to be honest (even if it didn’t alter the files, it’d just be a chore) but a Purchased location (folder or drive I assume might work quite well), that’s potentially a good solution and another backup of items previously downloaded. I guess I just don’t have to be organised with the other software!

One deficiency of the ‘Purchased/Favourites’ list the Qobuz API might provide is that none of the software I’ve tried currently marks items removed from the Qobuz catalogue as ‘removed’ so you try to play something and nothing happens - either the API doesn’t return data that the purchase is no longer available to play/download or the 3rd party software doedn’t handle it well.

I’ve mentioned before that I really quite like Roon and subscribed for several years, it’s just not essential for me personally. May give it another shot for a year after the 11 week trial concludes. We’ll see.

Interestingly Storage Locations has this:

I’m pretty certain that’s just Favourites and/or playlists I can stream - why would it be so tricky to just have Qobuz Purchased as an option to stream - the answer I think is that it would cause duplication in the Roon Library if downloaded locally stored items were not excluded (though if only using the Qobuz API it shoul be accurate as they’d have no idea where I’d stored previous downloads).

Early on with my Qobuz experience over 10 years ago I also religiously downloaded different versions in FLAC and ALAC to try to look for sonic differences on my streamer. These days this seems a bit extreme and I’d transcode or not bother. Life’s too short.

Well I must say that Roon playback sounded excellent on the main system last night, soundstage and detail much better than I can recall in the past.

The memory footprint also seems lower than when I last used the app.

Yes, recent Roon upgrades do seem to have tweaked things a bit. It’s also a bit snappier than it was. Qobuz Connect still has the edge if streaming; local file playback via Roon is a notch above both.

I still get the occasional track skipping in Qobuz; they’ve certainly improved things after their disastrous cloud migration but still have a way to go.

I’m considering enabling Volume Leveling in Roon, using the Album mode with a target level of 23 LUFS, as I’ve seen some people recommend. I’d be interested to hear others’ opinions on Volume Leveling—what are the advantages and disadvantages? Does it have any audible impact on sound quality?

I am not using Roon, but the software engineer for Lumin (my streamer) sent me a file today to update my P1 for volume leveling. A couple of people have done it and report a sound upgrade.

Going to try it tomorrow, I use Spotify.

Is it correct that -23 LUFS is for TV and -14 LUFS is for music?

The -14 LUFS target employed in Roon volume leveling is derived from the Spotify, whereas the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) loudness recommendation, initially implemented in 2010, is -23 LUFS.

If the max bit width of your streamer/DAC is 32 bit, then by all means go for it, it will be lossless because Qobuz max bit width is 24 bit.

I’m also curious about this. I’ve never used it. I mostly listen to jazz and classical and don’t ever reach for the volume control when playing on my main system.

When I play on my Mu-so2 outdoors I don’t usually listen to classical since that environment doesn’t work well for the wide dynamic range of a lot of classical music (especially orchestral).

I installed the update earlier, to me there is more information coming through now, I like what I am hearing so far. Previously I had volume leveling set to off.

Here is some info from Spotify, remove it if not allowed @Richard.Dane

I don’t see how volume matching could ever create a sonic upgrade.

I think volume matching would be beneficial if playing a Playlist when friends are over and I want a constant sound level in the background. Another time when volume matching would work for me is when I allow the Innuos to randomly select tracks.

This feature is not available yet on Innuos Sense.

I’ve got a upgraded A1 with S1 PS for my tube system. It’s currently in storage, but it saw a huge uplift from the last FW update + Roon Only mode. It matters!
