SACD and Bluray hi-res audio

The SA-12 wasn’t on general discount in the UK. Only through one dealer, who must have put something together to pick up some (last?) stock. Other UK dealers seem to have it at full whack still. Even units s/h on ebay are higher than the price that was available!

@Jamiewednesday @Dan_M - any recommendations for good reference rock SACDs? I have Floyd’s DSOTM & WYWH, War of the Worlds and Alan Parson’s Eye of the Sky.

Thinking of some Dire Straits and The Eagles. Van Halen II is also available locally…

I’ve only got 3 SACDs DSOTM, War of the Worlds and Dire Straits Brothers In Arms.

Dire Straits have done a few SACDs so worth buying in you like them.

Wish You Were Here was done as SACD version too. Gaucho (SD) and The Doors worth considering.

They are expensive though.

Most of mine are classical and singer songwriter (e.g. Eleanor McEvoy). But yes Floyd, Straits are pretty common. The Steve Hoffman forum is probs a good resource.

I’ve been collecting all of the Steely Dan sacds on Analogue Productions they have all been really good imho. As part of their 75th Anniversary of Atlantic Records series they are releasing discs by Yes, Genesis, Bad Company, Crosby Stills & Young amongst others. Have a look at the Acoustic Sounds website for more info together with discs available on other labels such as Mobile Fidelity. As Dan_M commented earlier they are expensive. I try to order mine through importcds when they have a sale on which helps to keep the price down a little, also three or four at a time to help keep postal charges down.

Do you not get stung for tax and admin fees too?

20 % vat is added to each order. I’ve placed a lot of orders over the years and have never had to pay any customs/admin fees but that’s only my experience.

Having only recently got an SACD player, and starting to get hold of a few, the one that really blows me away is the MoFI Workingmans Dead by the Grateful Dead.

To my (old!) ears it actually betters the original 80’s MoFi half speed master - whereas American Beauty (which I also bought) doesn’t…

I also picked up second hand off ebay the stones Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed on SACD which I also recommend.

I’ve got The London Years which is really good. All the reviews I’ve read of the Stones ABKO sacds have been really positive. They’re becoming more difficult to find now.

I have both MoFi SACD and they sound good to me. I don’t have the half-speed masters, though. What I do have is the DVD-A releases, which include a surround sound mix - which I’ve never heard as I’m not set up for it. Was that ever released in another format?

Maybe of of no interest, but the MFSL Sinatra releases are magnificent.

if you are into Roxy Music then you might well be interested in SACD’s by Phil Manzanera, Burning Shed have a pre-order for 3 Japanese SACD’s, Diamond Head, 801 Listen Now and K-Scope, I bought previous package of 801 Live and Quiet Sun Mainstream, typical Japanese packaging, obi strip and very detailed booklets. Highly recommended

Mike, the 2018 remix of “Animals” is available on SACD and is a must- have (better than the vinyl and Blu-ray), as are the Stones ABKCO/Decca SACDs, especially “Let it Bleed" and “Beggars”.

Other favourite of mine are “Amused To Death” Roger Waters, “Super Nature” Goldfrapp, all the CAN SACDs, the standard CBS SACDs of “Blonde On Blonde”, “Blood On The Tracks”, “Brining It All Back Home”, “Freewheelin’” and “Highway 51” by old Bob, “Sextant” and “Head Hunters” by Herbie Hancock, “Surfer Rosa” by The Pixies and - if you can find them – the old Depeche Mode SACDs. Plenty of great classical and jazz stuff too, if you’re into them and want suggestions.

I was worried someone would say this, as I “only” have the vinyl and Blu-ray of this. But, its available locally.

I’ll probably grab this off Acoustic Sounds along with a few others.

For my birthday last week, four of Dutton Vocalion’s excellent 70s Quad remasters on SACD:

Tomita’s Ravel is great, but the Bermuda Triangle is very odd. On the Tilson Thomas, I’ve only listened to the Gershwin Rhapsody yet, but it’s very good and a fairly active Quad mix. Not given the Weather Report a proper listen yet.

Thanks Stephen. I’ll have to check those out.

Just picked up 4 Analogue Production RCA Living Stereo discs from them.
