Hi all
Quick update on the collection of CB stuff.
Boxes arriving and then going back out for service.
Quick post as regarding any advantage of purchasing equipment with very closely matched serial numbers?.
Was or is their any advantage in saying pre/hicap/power being as close as possible or is the CB more likely to close on sound etc over it’s entire run
Obviously all will be serviced together now.
Only asking as I jumped on a 62/hicap/140 that only had a spread of approx 200 across the 3 units
Secondly can mm boards be serviced
Regards
M
If you have 2 hicaps then having them closely matched or serviced at the same time and similar type is important. So 2 CB, 2 Olive, 2 OC or 2 DR and having them serviced at same time is best.
With having your kit all close together then you will get system synergy.
And yes the mm boards will get serviced at same time, replacing any caps that can be replaced.
If you get the 62 serviced by Darren at class A, he will do the phono boards at no extra cost.
I agree with Dan, having CB kit serviced will bring it to a similar level of performance and also matters if using 2 or more power amps and power supplies.
Nevertheless, sample variations between older equipment seem to be a factor worth considering. I had and sold on a NAP32 that still did not sound right or similar to other 32s and 42s, despite being serviced.
I have a newly recapped NAP110 which sounds slightly better than an unserviced one, but the difference is not huge.
The differences between olive era pre-amps, amps and power supplies does not seem to be so pronounced, so perhaps Naim’s production process was simply more consistent by then.
It will also cost less for Darran at Class A to carry out the work.
He does a great job too and fast turnaround. I prearranged for him to service a 52, Supercap 2 and XPS2 and it was done in a day. I dropped off in the morning and picked up when done in the late afternoon.
Note that this was arranged weeks in advance but I did a holiday in the area at the same time.
Serial numbers are irrelevant here - its about the service history / recapping
If its all being redone within weeks of each other then nothing to worry about
