Service/repair for multiple (older) Naim components

Agree with you that driving would be much, much preferable for the reasons you point out. I still think the original packing helps a lot with that, especially the lower part, as it makes it safe to transport the platter, etc.

If you have to actually ship it, you need to be prepared to then refit the tonearm to the deck on the way back. While this is nowhere close to a full tear-down + setup, it is quite a bit more involved than just driving one over.

Getting the Naim parts serviced should be straightforward. The Linn might give you more problems to solve and few of us here are in the States.

You could try to contact ThomasOK, a stateside Linn specialist. Not sure the dealership name but he frequents the hifiwigwam LP12 users site. He really is very helpful.

If anyone here has contact details for him and Richard is happy we could post a link?

Stu

Thomas Oā€™Keefe is in Westland, Detroit.

Mentioning the name is fine, but strictly no links here, thanks.

Thanks Richard. Iā€™m sure he can be tracked down using the info above. Sadly I donā€™t know the name of his dealership.

Hi Stu,

The OP (Cliff) seems to be in Florida and has some (elderly) receipts for previous work - so, putting 2 +2 together, Iā€™m hoping thereā€™s a Linn dealer not too far away (in relative terms).

That would be ideal. However, over time most dealerships in the States seemed to have dropped Linn so another option if needed.

Stu - I was afraid of that news (part expecting it). Iā€™m earnestly hoping Cliffā€™s going to tell us different and that he has someone accessible, noting no LP12 boxing.

I have visions of the need for a Kradle, the usual consumables, and a Skype call with some UK-based (or US for that matter) LP12 surgeons :grinning:

Agreed HL. On the upside he could sort the amps and speakers first and use another source. The LP12 could become a longer term project in tribute to his late father. There are always options.

Hello all,
Wonderful information shared here. Advice seems to converge in the direction of having the amp, preamp and power-source overhauled before dealing with the LP12. All of this equipment is in FL, but, I live in Atlanta. I have already looked up my local Linn dealer in Atlanta and will reach out to them in dealing with the LP12. In terms of getting the whole system to Atlanta, it seem driving is the best way to accomplish this. Itā€™s a long trek, but, worth it to me. The LP12 will be the most difficult to transport given the possible pitfalls previously mentioned. I will have to get creative and construct something appropriate for the car ride. Thank you!

My brother moved from Miami FLA to GA and says itā€™s a nice drive
Itā€™s certainly very pleasant around the Alpharetta area where he lives.
Good luck with the move and servicing!

If you are not keen on buying the original packing, why donā€™t you try asking the Linn dealer if you could borrow a set they may have laying around to transport the deck?

Expanded polystyrene foam sheet is useful for transporting - half inch thick, and just a bit larger than the inner platter, say 6 and half inches square. Remove the lid and pack separately with the hinges and those little rubber bumpers at the front sides of the lid (unless, of course, your dad got fed up with them continually falling off and applied a spot of superglue to them - I certainly did mine!)

Take off the outer platter and belt and pack separately. Cut a three-quarter inch slot from the edge to the centre of the sheet. Lift up the inner platter just enough to slide the sheet under it so that it fits around the bearing, and let the inner platter rest onto the foam. Tie the Tiktok to its arm rest with one of those ā€œtwisty wireā€ things.

And just drive gently. Itā€™ll be fine!

And I wouldnā€™t be concerned at this stage about ā€œupgradesā€, unless anything is actually broken or badly worn - the Valhalla board may need attention because of its age. So let the Linn dealer in Atlanta (Sound Image, over by Dobbins air base?) have a look at it, give it new oil and a belt, reset the springs etc, and it will sound pretty d@mn fine.
