Should we fix our home energy prices?

It takes the data directly from Octopus. I forget how I set it up but it was quite logical.
The free version of the app only displays the past month. You can pay for the full 12months if you wish.

I got 21.044p per kWh. Octopus weren’t the cheapest for me and they’re a manipulative company.

Everyone should really just listen to me. I’m a brilliant trader.

Wow - so you spent your time and energy moving suppliers to save 1.856 English pence per kWh compared to someone else!

Maybe you might have got more enjoyment from squatting flies or scratching your back instead?

I am on the Octopus Flexible tariff (changes every few days )

Currently 21.65 p / Kwhr Electric
5.34 p /KWhr Gas

The best rate I can find (1 year fix ) is
**Supplier name: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Tariff name: Fix’d Dual Aug24 v4.0. Tariff type: Dual Fuel Only - Fixed. Payment method: Direct Debit. Electricity unit rate: 20.600p per kWh. Electricity standing charge: 56.018p per day. **Gas unit rate:5.736p per kWh. Gas standing charge: 31.000p per day. Exit fees: £25.00 per fuel. Tariff Term: 12 months

Doesn’t seem a bad fix for certainty for 12 months ??

Here’s how you deal with internet people.

i) The saving is almost 9%. That’s 9% saving on Hungryhalibut’s new price, not my old variable price which was even higher.

ii) The whole point being the timing of the deal. Predicting what the offers will be 2 months ahead (see my post Jun 14).

iii) You don’t know how big and/or inefficient my house is, so the pence is irrelevant.

iv) The gas saving was also high, but we don’t have Halibut price yet.

v) If you look at my original post, it states I saved 12% & 15% on the variable rate.

vi) I don’t do it for enjoyment, I do it to save money. It took less than an hour to search and change. I then did it for my old Mum & Dad. 12% & 15% saving on shall we say what £2,500, £3,500, £4,500… per year? How much do you earn per hour? Do the maths.

vii) I do enjoy squatting flies. I posted the best fly squatter in “The Best” thread and even described the angle of attack enjoyment aspect.

Anything else you’d like to know?

Four and a half grand a year?! Fk me, you need to plug those gaps in the old vampire’s nest…

Could be? Just giving examples. My house has very inefficient insulation.

The rooms in a Transylvanian castle tend to have quite high ceilings from what I remember. :man_vampire:

Perhaps it’s aircon in his crypt.

Time to move from fixed to variable??

They estimate that their ‘Flexible’ tariff will save £15.67 a month compared to their Fixed tariff.

My renewal date is 12th Oct.

What’s your postcode?

It’s LA1.

Why do you ask?

Is it cheaper up north?

Not a North South thing, just who’s the supplier to your specific area.

I don’t have the time to look into your details, but the variable tariff will be going up 10% in a month and likely another 3% in Jan. So you can add that for a start.

Here’s a quick quote from Outfoxthemarket in central Lancaster. A lot cheaper than the Octopus fixed.

**Supplier name: Outfox The Market. Tariff name: Fix’d Dual Aug24 v5.0. Tariff type: Dual Fuel Only - Fixed. Payment method: Direct Debit. Electricity unit rate: 23.075p per kWh. Electricity standing charge: 51.188p per day. **Gas unit rate:5.821p per kWh. Gas standing charge: 31.620p per day. Exit fees: £25.00 per fuel. Tariff Term: 12 months

Many thanks for this, @Count.d

I just got a quote based on my usage from Outfox and they are £2187 for a fixed compared to £2300 for Octopus Fixed and £2108 for Octopus variable (‘predicted’).

But I can’t sign up for Outfox now as it would trigger an exit fee.

What I’m not sure is whether the Octopus quote includes the predicted price rises or not?

Just a (wary) thought…. in the past a number of small, agile, very competitively priced, market disrupting energy companies rewarded their customers by going bust at which point they were unceremoniously dumped into one or other of the ‘established’ suppliers at whatever rate they chose to charge…

At which point the regulatory authority assured us all it could never happen again :joy::joy::joy::rofl:

Or is my memory of a couple of years back failing me?

I stand, of course, to be corrected.

Your current renewal date is in 44 days time. You can switch within 49 days, so you can do it now.

Your variable quote is at today’s prices. It will go up 10% in October. The Outfoxmarket is way cheaper for you.

Go on their site, put your postcode in and switch. It will take you 20 mins. Stop faffing about.

I was a victim of the small companies going bust. And ended up with British Gas

With whom?

Outfoxthemarket.

Yes but that’s just a small part of the story. Being with those smaller companies offering very low rates for years, meant saving a fortune. When some of them ended, you would have only been transferred to the usual bigger suppliers like everyone else and even then you just switch to someone else. No one forces you to stay with anyone. I remember being with Avro for years, saving something silly like over 30% on the average.
