I will give a full update on the 40As once they have settled in.

Perfect Nigel

Enjoy

Swapped my Audiomica speaker cables as they were too short and also wanted to hide the cables and ended up with Nordost Blue heaven cable and was shocked at what an upgrade they were. And you can’t see the cables either :joy:

l got some new lights for my room, enabling me to move the speakers so they are more similar in distance from the side walls, and pulled them away from the rear wall.

Aesthetically, I am pleased with the new lights, and am convinced that there has been a sonic improvement from repositioning the speakers and my chair.

I am also pleased that I never took my dealer up on an offer for some ex-dem 50ASLTS: the 40A’s are quite heavy enough to move…

I know what you mean about the weight of the ATC 40a’s and not to mention the Podiums, having been a previous owner of both. I do not know if you have or not tried Stack Audio Auva’s? I personally found these to be equal if not better of the Podiums. They certainly made life easier moving the speakers into position.

I have cotton gloves to avoid getting fingerprints all over the cabinets, and grab the heat fins and the top of the speakers to lift them off the Podiums.

I took the spikes off a while back, so that makes manoeuvring the speakers easier.

It’s not the weight (although I must say I’m not as strong as I was, and may have rotator cuff problems with my left shoulder), it’s more that I don’t want to damage anything.

I was in my ATC dealers one time, and they told me about getting 150ASLs (with one of the premium finishes) up a staircase, unboxed. Not easy, apparently

Therefore, may I recommend a good chiropractor
Seriously, if you do get the opportunity, have a listen to the Auva 70’s or 100’s.

Agreed, I sold my podiums after trying the Auva’s. Better isolation and the aesthetics are more pleasing to my eye.

Podiums seem to fetch reasonable money on the bay so suspect you could try the 70’s (can return if you don’t like them) or if you do like them sell the podiums and cover the cost….

I’ve just bought a set of the Auva 70s for my ATC40A to replace my Gaias.

I am interested in the discussion about these Auva/Gaias things - currently my 50ASL are on stands, underneath the spikeless stands are in order, carpet, underlay, 22mm chipbard, 25mm polystyrene, 150mm concrete, rest of the earth.

Any advice on what these may do and what I can expect from using them would be interesting. I am interested specifically for my ATCs if this needs to be a separate thread, please let me know

Were you unhappy with the Gaia’s? Online reviewer Alpha Audio said Gaia’s don’t work well with the 40’s. They seem to work better with some coupling if I remember correctly.

No not unhappy, I’ve used Gaias for quite a while now, first on my PMC Twenty5 23s and for the last three years on the ATC SCM40A. I think they have performed well.
I have read good things about the Stack Audio Auvas and was impressed hearing them in a friends system. So I have decided to try them out with the option if they don’t work out I can return within 60 days.

I would be very interested to hear what you think of the AUVA 70s on the ATC 40As.

I am considering a similar move.

@NigelB and @PeakMan will report back soon, my grandson’s dropping by at the weekend to help with the heavy lifting, the ATCs 36 Kg is a bit of a handful these days.

Another day another pair of ATCs. ATC SCM11 Cherry.

The retro styled QUAD can drive them loud. Also a set of LAiV pre / power / dac on the way too.

@NigelB Okay, so where to begin… first of all these are much more transparent than the Mogami. It makes me realise how thick and slightly veiled the latter were sounding. The mid-range is much more present. Everything is much more distinct and separated out which makes it easier to follow different musical strands. It does all this without dismantling the music too. It also means the sound-stage is larger as you’re aware of all the details in complex pieces, left to right and back to front. I can see why ATC use these. I certainly wouldn’t be going back to the Mogami. For £65, they’re a steal!

Thanks for this, Graeme.

I will be going for Van Damme XLRs. The only question in my mind is between the STARQUAD or XKE models. Not sure about the pros and cons of each model.

Designacable told me the starquad is unnecessary in a home audio setting. ‘A bit of overkill’ was their view. ATC said the standard XKE was ‘…a good choice’.

Just the kind of feedback I was looking for.

Van Damme XKE it is then.

Many thanks Graeme.
