The 70’s have the same construction as the 100’s, except less cells. The 50’s are different, read the Stack Audio specifications. ![]()
Beautiful speakers. ![]()
Thanks Jonathan, it’s in the Pennines and just over the moor from Yorkshire into Lancashire. Apparently the border changed at some point, I think it was in the 60s before my time. This is still a contentious subject for some.
It’s a wonderful part of the country and sitting here makes me question City life for sure.
latest and last upgrade was the Chord integrated and I can see why chord and Atc go so well together. Chord even use these speakers I believe on dem. Either way this is my final system and that’s mainly because for a very long time it’s the first time I have had no desire to play move adjust anything. I just turn it on play music and it sounds perfect! ![]()
I started a thread about this, I’m the same with SPL and ATC, I don’t ask myself any more questions, I just listen to music… it feels good when you get there!
It was on my list of candidates. But in the end, I didn’t choose it. And I haven’t regretted it for a moment.
I’ve no actual experience of the Lyngdorf but through strange timings for available equipment I’ve managed to end up with a Naim Uniti Nova PE and active ATC SCM50ASLTs and I’m only using the preamp and it all sounds wonderful. Part of me thinks I’m completely bypassing the Nova’s party trick and I should chop it in for a better, dedicated preamp but I give my head a wobble and say to myself ‘but didn’t you describe the sound as ‘wonderful’ two minutes ago’?
I’ve had a bit of messing around a bit because the Naim doesn’t have XLR outs and the ATC only has XLR inputs but Designacable is aware of the issue and make a rewired cable if you run into the same problem.
The purists may hold their noses and we may even be chased by them with flaming torches into a windmill which then gets set on fire like in an old black and white horror film so there’s that to consider I suppose? Oh, and I think I read in Analogue Audiofile magazine that witches live in D-Class amplifiers? Can anyone confirm please?
Honestly? I’d feed your ATCs with a dedicated preamp source…….
A quality preamp or the Nova PE with 50 SL speakers…
You find the sound magnificent until the day you listen to something better… that’s what happened to me with the 272/xpsdr which I found excellent on the 40A, then I listened to the SPL…
Chop the nova in for Atom HE or 222?
Like Hifi-dog I’d try an Atom HE or NSC222. It’s worth getting the latter if you plan to add a power supply or use a turntable, otherwise the HE will be just as good. Either will be better than the Nova PE and you’ll be able to use balanced connections. You won’t be powering the on board power amp you don’t actually use either.
I would also suggest trading the Nova for a 222 or if the funds would stretch further, a 332 and 333.
I now use my 32.5/hc into the 40 actives via some balanced to rca transformers, the pre replaced a spl headphone/pre. I much prefer the dedicated preamp, so would highly recommend trying one for yourself.
I used that design-a-cable “pseudo-balanced” DIN to XLR cable with Naim 282 + SuperCap > ATC active - worked beautifully. There are other forum contributors using similar solution with NAC552 and claim similar success.
I would not be afraid to go this route if cable runs are relatively short.
This is exactly why I love this forum. You’ve all given me great advice (exactly what I need) despite me being flippant and sounding like I didn’t want any! Haha!
Thanks chaps, lots of food for thought and talking about food, about a year of eating Asda value beans on white sliced cheap bread while I save hard for some of the spenny Naim gear You’ve suggested!
