Show us your ATCs

I use Stack Auva 50’s. They work great. I’ve also tested IsoAcoustics GAIA I under them and coupling with spikes, spikeshoes and granite slabs under the speakers. IMO Auva 50’s are kind of the best of both worlds. GAIA’s do give this depth and size to the sound and the room clearly plays less with the speakers, but they also lack a little bit of punch and immediacy. Auva 50’s give you both and the bigger models probably even more so.

Can only repeat my post with my stands
They really gave the best sound after while

It elevates speakers and you have 2 layers of dampers and spikes … more they « float » better they sound and the height gives even bigger sound stage

Thanks for your thoughts Patu :+1:

Hi,

Quiet afternoon in between emails and listening to Mindy Smith.

I just noticed the veneers on my Actives are matched Left and Right. Now that is a lovely touch.

ATC SCM 11 here now just over a year. I can’t seem to get on with them. I have tried them 1.7 metres apart, 1.2 metres apart, a few inches from the rear wall, 10 inches from the rear wall in various combinations but I can’t seem to get on with them in my roughly 19ft long by 10ft wide room. They are great in a friends bigger room.

So I think they will have to go, a shame but too bad.

How big is your room?

Have you tried changing your front end, perhaps say an nDAC to use with your CD transport? ATCs, even the entry series are very revealing of source quality.

Just a thought before you go on a speaker search.

Roger

Thanks for the replies but -

  1. My room is 19 by 10 ft approx. as stated in posting.
  2. No I use a Rega dac or the one in my Rega Saturn cd. I have no intention to change, I just think the speakers are not suited to the room.

Currently 1.6m apart. Six inches from rear wall, slight toe in.

Frustrating…. I have a 5m diameter round room and the 11’s work really well… sometimes a speaker just doesn’t work in a room.

One final question before you give up is what stands do you have them on? As that can be a game changer sometimes.

Yes - stands; a range that is often scorned on here - I have them on a set of Hi Fi Racks stands made in a really heavy cherry wood. I don’t use spikes on them as I realised they don’t make any difference at all to the way the SCM 11 sound, to me at least.
I have come to the reluctant conclusion that they are too much for the room, quite the opposite to some Proac Tablettes 10 I had up to about 2 years ago. They were underpowered.
I just need to find an in between I guess without breaking the bank.

Sounds like you have tried everything. I like mine but it is true that they need a bit of volume to get really going. That may be why they are not suiting your space. My room is larger so I can let them fly when I need!

I tested some Neat Iota Alphas and when I bought mine. Whilst I preferred the ATCs I did think the Neats worked well in a smaller space with lower volumes. I’d have them on the list, plus perhaps others in the Neat range. Popular brand as a pairing with Naim. Plenty of other choices of course.

… ATC SCM 7 … maybe …

Ah, OK but I was going by your profile which has an Audiolab CD player.

Whilst I still find it very surprising that a pair of SCM11s driven by an SN2 would overpower what is by U.K. standards not that small a rooom, if they do, they do and at some point you have to give up trying. I once ran a pair of Kudos floor-standers. They were forum favourites but I could never get them to work for me in my room and eventually traded them in. Best of luck in finding replacements.

Roger

Thanks for that, profile now changed.
Not sure the room is overpowered but the issue is with getting the bass right. It either booms if speakers close to wall, or is underpowered if too far away. I can’t seem to find a happy medium irrespective of where I sit in the room.
A suggestion was SCM7, I won’t follow that up but I have listed the speakers on a well known site and will see what that brings, if anything. If it does I will revisit the Neat Petite classic and Ministra.

What Kudos did you have?

C20s.

I found the high notes somewhat excessive, the bass rather boomy on orchestral material for example and lacking the presence my current speakers have in spades. But that’s my room and my tastes in musical reproduction. I have heard speakers from the titan range (606s, perhaps) and preferred them, but that was only at a show.
