I’ve got tickets for RIAT - Friday and Saturday. I haven’t been for a few years and am really looking forward to it.. Hopefully it will still go ahead with all that’s happening in the world …..

Finally decided to opt for the RF100-500 which has just arrived.
Have been content with using my EF100-400 over the years with the ef-rf adapter, though a little frustrated with focusing a very small part of the time on fast flying things some way a way.
Have just done the usual back garden test, no cats were available as they’re in bed, but a visiting squirrel made a keen subject.
After all the umming and ahhing, should have done this years ago.
Focus is quicker, quieter and images sharper. Not really a surprise as rf is made for r cameras!
Hoping weather stays kind for Shuttleworth at the weekend…

The f7.1 top end is not such a major problem at all.
After your fairly recent post re. upgrading your computer, I did the same. My denoises on Lightroom used to take 4 minutes on my old (12 years old maybe) computer. On my new computer, they take 4 seconds. Staggering.

Agreed, I’m also finding the EF a bit slow, although at least with the R5.2 it’ll autofocus with the 2x extender.
It was my very first L series lens, acquired well over a decade ago.

Chris I think you may well be right.
I haven’t use the EF100-400L for a couple of weeks, using the EF400L for my last trip to Titchfield Haven. Time for some practice, methinks.
Assuming birds in flight is your thing, I have just googled ‘which Canon AF case for birds in flight on R5 Mk II?’ Loads of stuff came up including Youtube films. But you have probably done this already.
Canon themselves do a “how to use AF on the R5.2” which I have downloaded (and also had printed). It has AF settings for three types of bird - perched, large flying & small flying. So I dutifully set them up and saved them. Went off to TH to try them out, but must have got something wrong and the thing refused to focus at all. Went back to basics and still managed to shoot over a thousand (that High Speed mode is a killer!)
Too many d@mn options on this beast - worse than Windoze 11

I’d suggest you watch the appropriate videos for setting up AF on the R5 II on YouTube by Jan Wegener. Worth following if you shoot birds.

It is becoming very complicated , I bought a Canon R50 simply because it is so simple, a bit better than point and shoot . I traded in a Canon 4000 recently and had some really good photos with it and it was basic controls only
Getting the camera to do what you want it to do is the first step.
