Interesting - Never seen that chamfer on the front reveal of the LS3/5 or LS3/5A cabinet before!
Looks rather better than the common flat edge…
I agree that the LS3/5A crossover is not simple, and even though at 15 ohms it is tube-friendly, not all solid-state amps are happy campers. Nait 50 seems to work fine, however.
Has anyone used a 5si with LS3/5a type speakers?
Thank you for sharing, we use a NAT01 on a daily basis (active SL2 system) and have a NAT02 in reserve!
Older Naim gear is a great match with LS3/5A’s. A Nait or Nait 2 would work well, but like the LS3/5A, they have gotten ridiculously expensive. If you can find an NAC62/NAP140 in nice condition they are also an excellent pairing with the LS3/5A, and they should be available for under $1000. Even better if they have had a recent service.
The best sound I have ever heard from my LS3/5A’s was when I had a pair of Naim NAP 135 monoblocks driving them. The 135’s had incredible control over the LS3/5A’s drivers and the speakers sounded so much more dynamic than with the NAP 250, which is also an excellent amplifier. In fact it was difficult to believe that the 135’s were producing only five more watts per channel than the 250.
I also had a NAT02 ( actually a few over the years) and it gave up very little to the 01, although the 01 was better at detail retrieval. I really like the chrome bumper generation of Naim gear. I have an NAC42.5 /HICAP/NAP110 which works quite well with vintage British monitors like the LS3/5A, Linn Kan I and KEF Reference Series One. The NAP 110 is in need of a service.
Great looking Quad gear! I had a Quad FM1 years ago and was amazed at how nice sounding it was. I also had a pair of vintage Quad 2 tube monoblocks which I wanted to use with my LS3/5A’s, but they did not have enough power to run them.
Speaking of Creek Audio, I have an old pair of CLS 10’s from the early 1990’s with the green tweeter. IME they are not in the same league as the LS3/5A’s, but they are very pleasant sounding.
Thank you. I understood that Quad II should sound great with ls3/5a 15 ohm. Not sure if you have tried the combo?
As I mentioned above I did try the combo but the Quad 2 monoblocks did not have enough power to drive the 15 ohm LS3/5A. I ended returning them to the place I bought them from and purchased a Futterman H3 OTL headphone amplifier, which at 50 watts per channel was a much better match with the 15 ohm LS3/5A.
Great workspace and an equally great Van Morrison album.
Are those Chartwell LS3/5a’s?
They are. Although they are a tad better with the valves, they are pretty damn good with an old NAP140 I use.
Not as detailed as the Falcons, they allow me to enjoy all the badly recorded stuff I pollute my ears with.
The Creek passive pre is a recent addition. Surprised at just how good it is.
Are you talking about the “golden badge” or the standard/silver version of Falcon ?
Would you mind sharing pros and cons (for you) of the sub pairing the falcon,
Asking because was willing to add a sub (same as yours or a REL “classic 98”) to my Proac 10 S…
This question is poping up again because my proac will be soon challenged by a pair of new Falcon Golden Badge.
Im concern about the “connection”, the “symbiose” between the speakers and the sub…in term of speed, accuracy… (some mentioning loosing the “magic” part of Ls3/5 sound with a sub added…)
Thx in adv for your comments
No, not at all. I think the AB3a active subwoofers really work for me. I can easily setup the filter and gain to suit my room without loss of the ls3/5a magic. Rogers use the same woofers (B110 reverse engineered) as the ls3/5a, then there is no issue with speed and accuracy.
I’ve setup their filter at 80hz and only 9 o’clock for the gain on the dial. So the active subs only augment for the missing bass region. I’m very pleased with the result. Sound stage is wider and deeper. Seem to me they also improve the mid and high as well.
The setup with Rogers looks neater than REL sub but they came with a higher price tag. Hope this helps.
Sound really good then, thx.
Next stop : Find some dealer with it…for a home test…will be challenging because ls3/5 is not so popular here…nor dedicated sub
Standard.
These are subtle variations.
Unfortunately I didn’t have a valve amp when I had the Falcons. In fact, they are why I bought one.
