The Origin Live mat is very thin, might be something to bear in mind given the 1200G’s range of VTA adjustment.
To add, I used an Origin Live mat on my old Systemdek, liked it. It’s 1mm thick, so I lowered the arm slightly to accommodate it. I sold my Systemdek for a 1200G and sold the OL mat with the 'dek. I haven’t been tempted to swap out the standard rubber mat on the 1200G yet
The standard $30 Technics mat is pretty darn good I’m convinced. Better is not always better. Right piece for the job means more.
For example, the Technics mat is low cost but significantly more expensive than the $5 felt mat on my TEAC. I thought, “the TEAC is also direct drive. Felt mats on direct drive seems like an odd affectation. I bet it gets a nice upgrade from using a rubber mat like the one on my 1200. I’ll borrow it and give it a go.”
Before I had made it through one track I knew it was a mistake.
When speaking to my dealer, he mentioned that a lot of care had gone into choosing the right sounding arm, headshell, motor, mat, feet on that cheap deck so swapping out the mat and getting a bad result wasn’t a surprise. They sort of implied that if you are going to muck around with the stock parts, it’s probably better to consider whether the manufacturer would have chosen that mat you’re considering if the price point had been higher or whether you are clearly going in a different direction than the manufacturer would ever go regardless of budget.
As a previous owener of Technics decks for 23 years, i tried various mats, acrylic, felt, cork, cork/rubber mix stock rubber mat. The best mat i have tried & stuck with was the Oyaide br-12. Amazing product & works excellent giving more room for VTA adjustment. A bit pricey some might say but does a great job.
No, it’s not what I wanted to say. And I love Dire Straits.
I wanted to say that most of the albums in the listening thread are well known albums, like Dire Straits or Led Zeppelin, or rock, or jazz from the 60’s. I don’t find something I could want to discover. There must be, but the majority don’t present an interest for me.
I am more jazz fusion, modern nowadays jazz or soul funk from the 70’s.
I opened a few threads on the music I like, but unfortunately there were no many posts.
The only one where I am often active is London jazz refreshed thread.
The latter thread has certainly raised my awareness FR. Thanks. Whilst I’m not filling my shelves with loads of jazz, they’re certainly fuller than they were, at least in part due to that thread.
I was running the Korf on the PTP with a 1042 in parallel to the Artemis with Aro and proteus, using it for background music but it kept pulling me out of my book, so…
The Aro and proteus have now made their way onto the PTP Lenco, it required a bit of surgery to make room for the cable run and just to make life difficult I’m using the TEAC Washi paper mat so I needed a spacer to get the VTA, I had a couple of spares with the Schröder and the certal one is doing the job for now. An 8mm armboard would remove the need for a spacer but I only have 12mm ones at the moment. Odd thing, I ran it over the Hifi News test disc resonance tracks and it wobbles at around 13Hz, which seems a bit high given the specs of arm and cartridge but there’s no lack of bass.
You mentioned the London Jazz thread, which I didn’t know existed. I had a look at it and I am already very worried that you are going to cost me a lot of money. I saw recommendations for many albums, listened to a few on Spotify and have already spent too much money this evening buying CDs!
Some pictures, just because … (in addition to sounding really good it’s also a cool design - except perhaps for the bearing housing being visible, but obviously unavoidable given the design).
Actually, lovely as the RB3000 (and the earlier RB2000) undoubtedly are, I reckon the star of the show is the amazing ceramic platter. It’s a thing of real beauty and utter precision, and when you consider just how difficult it is to make compared to other platter types, quite remarkable really.
I think these look incredible, a genuine design breakthrough for a product that has just evolved over the years.
My next upgrade will be from a P6 to one of these.
Just need to make my mind up on pick up.
All the TT you ever need!!
As much as it may be a technical ‘tour de force’ it is the one thing that stopped me getting the P10. The white just doesn’t sit right with me. RB3000 on the P8 is my goal.
