There been have had a string of custom jobs too. They always seem to have requirements and budgets for new things that spark new hifi companies.
We think of all the speaker manufacturers that started life contracted by the beeb. But oddly enough the first product PMC made wasn’t the BB5, it was a transcription turntable for the BBC.
Thank you. I’ve never had a Nottingham before, mostly LP12s, Rega’s, a couple of Roksan and Well Tempered. What this Nottingham seems to do, is impart less of itself and let the cartridge do its thing, so pretty neutral. The cartridge is very special, and i need to find the best matching phono stage at a reasonable cost.
Don’t know about Johnnie’s t/t but his jeans were Landlubbers, very hip-hugging and popular alternative from the US to either Levi’s or all the horrible loons that were appearing. Not recommended for my current age group.
Here’s my WallySkater in action. I bought it recently and learned to use it today. I was a little overwhelmed by it at first, but it turns out that doing the tests and setting AS isn’t that difficult after all. If I had used a test record, or the other so-called blank record tricks for setting AS it would end up being way too high and cause excessive wear on the right channel. Lyra warned me about that as well when I got my Atlas.
Yes, the WallySkater is part of their tool suite. It does two things. It measures static and dynamic frictional force of the tonearm, to make sure nothing – like the tonearm wires or bad/misadjusted bearings – is binding the movement of the tonearm as it tracks across a record. It is also used to accurately set anti-skating force for the tonearm.
I’m interested in how it works, and am happy to believe it’s better at finding a good average than some of the other methods sometimes heard of (especially visual ). But “accurate” is a wrong term as anti-skating will depend on the individual record & track as well.
If you watch the Wally Tools Youtube video on the WallySkater Part 1, they talk about how the variance of anti-skate is parabolic across the record, and that using the tools gets it much closer to being right on average across that curve than other methods. They point out that using test records or blank records for antiskate gets it totally wrong.
The idea is that for a 12" tonearm AS should be 9%, and you want to get it using the average of the outside of the record and inside, keeping the two within 4% of each other. For a 9" arm they say use 10%.
