Ivor’s ghost? He isn’t dead yet, hopefully he will live for a while yet! ![]()
Just applied the pro next grease it and if anything it’s worse. That’s a new belt, new cable and bearing grease. I’m out of ideas now. Maybe a trip to the dealer needs planning. It’s an bass bloom sound on pretty much every rotation.

Please excuse my ignorance, but could someone please tell me what’s the point of having two arms (or three) on a turntable ?
I wouldn’t want to for several reasons. For one, there just aren’t many choices at the level of tonearm I’m using. Most tonearms in the higher end range have fixed headshells. Removable headshells are a compromise by comparison, since you sacrifice rigidity and potentially introduce unwanted resonance with moving parts that don’t exist on fixed headshell designs.
Secondly, when swapping a headshell/cartridge one usually needs to adjust VTA and VTF. That’s just to fussy for me. I just want to be able to pull a record off the shelf, put it on the turntable and play it. By using two tonearms (one stereo, one mono) all I have to do is change the input on the phono-stage and play it with the appropriate tonearm. That’s a far better way to play records selected ad hoc.
Yet another lovely looking set up.
Thank you Andy!
I wasn’t suggesting you start using removable headshells. You’re sorted with three arms. ![]()
It’s a suggestion to other people who don’t want to buy three top quality arms, and are happy to buy one top quality arm and three headshells.
I can swap headshell, adjust arm height, adjust tracking weight and anti skate in approx two minutes.
With regards to unwanted resonance. The arm I use (Denon DA-309) is not rigid, it’s specifically designed that way to eliminate unwanted resonance.
That’s pretty much what I mean by ‘too fussy.’
I had a Naim Superline. When I wanted to switch arms (between stereo and mono) I had to swap phono cables on the Superline back panel input. That takes even less time than your headshell changes but enough to still be a nuisance and overly fussy. I ended up separating mono and stereo records, and putting myself in ‘mono or stereo listening mode’ for playing sessions. That’s not how I listen to music.
Now I have a multi-input phono-stage. I pull something off the shelf, put it on and play it without any fuss at all. I’m back to playing records ad hoc, without regard to stereo/mono format. I just push the appropriate input button on my phono-stage and cue the arm I want for the record. No adjustments, no cable swaps, no fussing with headshells. Takes one second to select the right phono-stage input. This works so much better for playing a system to enjoy music.
I think I’d never consider a single tonearm with removable headshells now that I have experienced how much more convenient it is to have multiple tonearms. I accept it isn’t for everyone. It’s more costly, and not all turntables support it. Otherwise, I see no downside to it.
Newly installed and playing some tunes!
Rega P10+Hana ML, Superline phono.
The box arrived last night. I found a nice series of helpful videos by Stereo Phil, Cheshire Audio. After 3 cups of coffee - I sat down and proceeded to swap the Hana from the P3 to P10. My son helped me lend a third hand! We tested our skills by mounting the Exact back onto the P3 - took 10 mins tops. First time ![]()
My son convinced me - worse case, I’ll loose a cartridge.
. Mounting the Hana on the P10 was harder than I thought. Mostly because of the horizontal placement. It took an hour! We placed the P10 on the stereo cabinet and then started playing! ![]()
Wow! My son and I sat and listened to an album that we’ve listened to a few dozen times, and we were like - wait what - that’s just continuing so far into the next note! Ohhhh-that was a maraca. Wow - everything is wide open! ![]()
I think it’s time to start reorganizing the records. Genre, Chronological, Alphabetical, Mood, Favorites, or Special!!! ![]()
Fabulous post @ankurrius
Wishing you many hours of enjoyment with your stunning new Rega P10 TT.
I looked through lots of the 5400 or so posts. Wow I almost forgot how deep the turntable rabbit hole is
I think when I get a chance I’ll try to find the pictures of my VPI TNT, Graham arm, Van den Hul setup.
Fantastic. Isn’t that great when the reality exceeds the expectation? Enjoy!
Your journey is inspiring me. P10 is a little out of my price range but a P8 isn’t. Again congratulations
@marcusman I was shocked after lifting the P10 out of the box. Compared to my circa 2003 P3, it’s quite a lot smaller…and lighter. I hadn’t anticipated the sonic transformation. Its a lot more of the good stuff, and clarity of instruments and soundstage. Rega has something special - simplicity being one of them. I couldn’t have unboxed an LP12 and swapped cartridges, and ready to roll in an hour!![]()
I have been following reviews from ‘The ear’, as they have reviews on both the P8 and the P10. Encourage you to read it. And good recordings make all the difference.
Seems like you and I share a lot of the same boxes - SN3/Hi-Cap, NDac/XPS DR.
. Synergy! Cheers
Yes Sir and the same city IIRC. Likely the same dealer as well. I’ll check out the reviews from ‘The Ear’. I think I read on that said they were impressed with the P10/ND9 combo which I would not have matched together.
Cool - I missed that you are a Seattleite! We can jam over coffee and excerpts from ‘a guide to being an Audiophile’ ![]()
TMR just released an in-depth article/review of the Hana ML. It’s a nice read.
The ND9 will play directly into the SN3. I imagine it’s fantastic. It’s worth listening to. Bring one over - and we’ll do a listen sesh! ![]()
I was not getting the desired sound from my P3-Exact combo - and I figured it was time to venture elsewhere. Frankly, I hadn’t even joined the Naim forum yet! So I just asked my dealer for advice - they recommended a MC as long as I had a dedicated phonostage for that.
And went for an MC cartridge (Hana ML) in January, this year. Hence the SL/SC. I don’t regret it at all. Listening to some more music tonight. The P10 doesn’t disappoint. I believe in the TT - no Smoke and Mirrors here!!! ![]()
Seems like @WolF has a P8+ND9>SN3/HiCap. Who would have known!
He’s your man!!!
