Shunyata Gamma & Theta Ethernet Cables

It’s been said many times but I found Catsnake needed a long long time to settle down. Initially, I too found it a bit soft with a slightly bloated bass but this disappears after a few weeks of use and then it made my C-stream sound a bit crude and ragged by comparison.

Do you still use BJC or Catsnake now?

I did until last year when I was lucky enough to find someone that had a Shunyata Sigma laying around. I borrowed it fully believing that I’d be returning it the following week. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Within the first few bars a knew it was a keeper. Honestly, it made the C-stream and Catsnake sound like bell wire.

I still have BJC for the long runs but Sigma for the final link.

It’s a well run in Catsnake. Let’s see what the Gamma brings.

Slightly controversial but I did find Catsnake directional, so maybe worth having a listen the other way?

I have a full loom CatSnake 6a Floating and with my system, plenty of detail and PRaT.

They replaced a variety of Chord streaming cables, Signature Digital, Epic and Clearway. Overall, much better SQ and although a thick cable, very easy to route as more flexible.

With new firmware due I’m going to sit tight with the sound signature of my kit I know best, and that’s with the C-Stream. I’ll compare the Gamma with that right away if it arrives before the new firmware. If not, I might try the new firmware for a couple of weeks to acclimatise before trying the Gamma.

Looks like the latter then!

Will you return the gamma?

It hasn’t arrived, but the firmware has! I don’t expect the cable for a week or so yet, as it had to be ordered from Shunyata.

Cable not being shipped until after 16th, so time to acclimatise to the great new sound of my system before swapping out the C-Stream though.

Once you have not believed me… looking forward how it is the next time
Your system is very much capable of showing Shunyatas strenths

Looks like it’s arriving tomorrow now. Can I resist plugging it in for a few days I wonder, as the new firmware is sounding exceptional…

It’ll be interesting if you do have a quick listen as I think you’ll find it has a very similar effect to what you’re hearing with the new firmware. Everything gets more organic, more natural, more dynamic and more tonally correct. These do seem to be the common traits when you reduce ‘noise’ in the digital domain.

That’s why I’m hesitant to try it straight away. I won’t know if it’s the firmware or cable contributing!

First-world problems rarely get less significant than this conundrum!

Why wait? I would be too curious to delay. How about putting it in place and then remove it after a while to see what changes?

Nothing like a big build-up! I take it the directional arrows are meaningless other than to remind you which way you’ve had it connected?

We await your thoughts..

Sitting there looking at it will tell you nothing! It looks nice and the packaging is remarkable, but you can’t judge a book by its cover.
