When we know of a significant musical birthday let’s put down a prompt for those who might wish to dig out and listen to something relevant. @Debs has just prompted me as to the fact that John Coltrane would have turned 99 today, but he passed at just 41 in 1967, imagine what he could have achieved had he lived on. Interestingly I can recall from Miles Davis autobiography that he (Miles) having had Charlie Parker as an early inspiration only really came out as a musician once he paired with John Coltrane.
Sadly not as simple as that. Many jazz musicians of that era (1950’s in to the 60’s) died as a result of drug related illnesses, mostly heroin addiction. Would they have been as prolific and as experimental without the substance abuse is an interesting question. Just the same sad that he, and others, perished so early in life.
@bruss interesting comments there, I often think the same. But back to Coltrane, he was an astonishing talent with no equal, he was a creative genius. Look on youtube for “John Coltrane Quartet - Impressions” It takes music to another level entirely
