SL2 3D printed grilles

Trying to make some SL2 grilles as the constant replacement of the rotting foam is quite expensive. Might cut out the centre and stretch some cloth speaker fabric over it, I listen to them without grilles any way. Thoughts?

Hi Mario

When I replaced the foam on my SL2s, I did it once, and that was it.

I didn’t have to replace it constantly.

There is a detailed thread on this (and DBL foam) somewhere on this forum.

I recall that when you cut the rectangles of foam to size, you could push them in braced against the walls of the top box, as they were originally, without any glue or other adhesive, so that they were just wedged and supported by their own foam structure.

Thanks, but I was only refering to the foam grilles that cover the drivers as you should be able to see from the pictures. Not the internal box foam.

Maybe 3d print with some sort of patter to look like ATC grills

Previous owner of my SL2s had already replaced the front grilles with good quality replacements that looked like they would last for many years after I sold them.

Signals HiFi shop in the UK would be able to identify who could sell you a long lasting pair.

April 1st……

That looks very interesting. Great job. Yes having the frame in metal and then the central area cut out with black material covering the whole thing sounds a smart way to do it. It will look great if done well (which I’m sure you will) and would solve that issue of degradation of the foam. I recall when I got my maple SL-2s the grills were literally disintegrating in my hands. Tom Tom replacements are good but they will go the same way in time so an alternative solution is a good idea. And I very much doubt it will affect the sound. I could tell absolutely no difference with grills off or on.

Thanks, yes will cut away the centre next. Its 1.6mm aluminium sheet as I work with that all day. Once the centre is cut out, it should be fairly light but 3D printing would be the go if I had access to that.

Doh!

I thought it was going to be difficult for the soundwaves to creep through Between the atoms of that metal plate.

3D printing is just so cool.

A bit more progress

Very cool. 3D printing is such a revelation I have custom covers for SBLs, NBLs, DBLs if anyone needs, all you need is a 3D printer. Cheaper than getting these done in foam I bet!
