SL2 Tweeter Replacement

Yes I know there’s been lots of threads about this but none seem to be open anymore.
I’ve just used my only spare tweeter which was looking well past it’s prime so looks like out with the saw and file and attack the mounting ring.
I shall need to replace the hook up wire which is RS PRO 4mm² Hook Up Wire, 11 AWG, 56/0.3 according to a long thread on the subject and the question is where to buy it other than RS themselves. If I buy from them it’s a 25m reel coming in at £60 whereas I only need 1 meter. I’ve drawn a blank with the usual searches and obviously I’ll spend the £60 if I have to but it seems a bit pricy for just 1 meter of plain old copper cable. Cheers, Alan

I would be interested to see that as I have a pair of new correct tweeters that I bought a couple of years ago when we were warned that production by Scanspeak was about to cease.

I have been thinking recently that I may as well install the new ones. I have bought a tube of the hylomar and soldering is no problem for me, but actually doing the swap is something I have hesitated to do.

Any 56 strand 0.3mm cable will do. Back when I had the time to do A/B tests for insignificantly small differences I found that the tri-rated cables (for fumes and flamability) sounded better than the bog standard versions. CPC have quite a range of hookup wire and cables and sell most of them by the metre. I’d be surprised if they didn’t have it. Another place that can be quite good value is Switch Electronics and they had the full range of some cable I was looking for - again in similarly standard combinations.

Why do you need a saw and file? Isn’t the tweeter just screwed to mounting ring? It’s more than a decade since I saw one but I seem to remember it was just a Scan Speak attached to the front of the ring and don’t remember anything unusual about it.

The saw and file bit is a little alarming. Not even sure why you need more hook up wire?

I still have a spare set of Naim spec tweeters! I too brought the Hylomar blue and its sat in my audio room for a while now..
Always thought if it’s not broken, it doesn’t need to be fixed. Other thing is not many people have the naim spec tweeters at the ready, which i kinda think is special :joy:

The latest tweeters have terminations on the side rather than the back of the tweeter so the original hook up wires are a little short

I received good advise regarding SL2 tweeter replacement. When applying the Hylomar I was told to add dots of it rather than a continuous line at equivalent to hour spaces on a clock face.

It actually came with a syringe filled with Hylomer blue. Surprise the hell out of me how it got through customs to New Zealand.
I probably won’t change them out unless I feel there an issue, I’d like to get some Kudos 606 or better one day! when I sell my 08’ mint Sl2 speakers the spare tweeters might be a little bit of a cherry for the prospective buyer.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions, I’ll look at CPC & Switch and see what they have.
I should have perhaps explained my problem but there has been quite a lot on here about this over the last few years. The current Scanspeak SL2 tweeters have one terminal each side whereas the older model had both on the back. This means the hook up cables are too short to reach the cable sockets but also the terminals stop the tweeter fitting through the mounting ring. The only solution is to cut 5mm X 10mm rebates in the ring to allow them to pass through it and be fitted ! Not a job I really fancy but better than scrapping the speakers. I’m keeping an eye on the auction sites for the original versions but I’d only buy new or nearly new if any appear. Cheers, Alan

Didnt forget your crystal 505!!!

Ah I see!

A round file would suffice, or better still a dremel with a suitable attachment. Amazon sell sets of attachments in all different profiles for metal.

If the termination on the back of the speaker is the same as SBLs/DBLs, then its not going to be a fun time, I would imagine the only real solution is to extend the current ones?

After a little googling I found these guys that sell it by the meter, or better still by 5 or 10 meter runs

I wanted the hook up wires to be hot gunned to the side of the tweeters to secure the fixing. Also. I also hot gunned all terminals so the cut outs in the tweeter fixing plate are slightly bigger than how the forum member who posted his experience a while ago did his (he did a very good job). To cut out the slots I started with a 4 1/2” grinder and finished with an 8mm round metal file. But honesty the file alone would only have taken ten mins per slot. The way I applied the Hylomar is how Jas G told me to do it. The latest tweeters sound great.

Oh and new hook up wires need to be 23cm. Original ones were 20cm. I went with 25cm to be safe but the shorter lengths would have been easier to dress.

Thanks so much everyone for all this info. and I’m spoilt for choice with the hook up cable!
Your photos are excellent Cohen and I’ll refer to them when the time comes. I take it you finished the tweeter connections before fitting through the mounting ring ? I’ve been wondering about fitting first and then solder and glue to keep the cut outs to a minimum but perhaps there’s too little space for that.
I blew a tweeter not long after buying the speakers and had a new pair fitted by Darran, the tweeter that has just been fitted is the other one from the original pair but it’s got me up and running again. I put my SBL’s in the main system as a temporary replacement and was amazed how good they sounded on the end of a maxed out LP12, 552 and a pair of 300drs, although they sound pretty good with CDS3, 555ps and SN3 on my other system.
Not sure when this job will happen but looking forward to the new tweeters so probably not too long. Thanks again, Alan

Did the exact same thing a couple of years ago. The tweeters have sat in a drawer ever since. I am toying with the idea of taking my SL2s up to Wimslow Audio to give them a once over and fit the tweeters.
