SN3 Balance issue

I apologise for opening another thread on this but all past threads seem to be closed and I have a specific question to @Bandit as he and his friend had the same problem as me and he’s in the same city.

I have a volume imbalance issue that is hindering the overall performance of my SN3. @Bandit may I ask which local dealer you took your unit to?

This is the position to get things centered but still not convinced the presentation is correct.

The volume knob can be pulled out and then put back to where the actual center is.

The best way to find the actual center balance is to play a test tone through the amplifier and test the speaker cables with a multimeter.

  • remove speaker cables from your speakers and lay the ends in front of you

  • play a test tone through the amplifier

  • measure the AC voltage on each speaker cable with a multimeter (setting volume at around 10 o clock is a good place)

  • adjust the balance until the output is similar on each cable

Thanks for this but the issue has only recently arisen. It used to be fine.

Yes, useful to remember. Indeed mine fell off within 24 hours of purchase.

Volume or balance knob that can be pulled out and re centered ?

Both I believe. But depending on how tightly it’s been fitted (clearly variable) it could be difficult to take off. Obviously huge caveats here… be careful.

I had to send mine back to my dealer due to a left/right imbalance low volume. Other people have had the same problem, search on the forum.
Have a nice day everyone

Hi James, I haven’t had it fixed yet. Mine has the same position of balance knob as yours in the picture below. I think I’m going to move on with the SN3.

Sorry that I cannot help.

Hi Bandit, many thanks. Sorry to hear yours is still a problem.

It has started crackling now when I move it. Off to the dealer I guess. Only just got my NDX2 back from a relay change… ugggh.

and now, after checking the warranty, it is just 2 weeks past the warranty period. Fuming…

The dealer may still honour the warranty

Let’s hope so. The last few months have been very frustrating. First the NDX2 losing a channel, now the SN3 having balance and crackling issues.

I have a SN and much the same problem, funnily enough to the right too. It’s not my first SN and not my first balance issue. Just centering the green spot would not ease the problem for me, this pots thing is a little annoying with costly amps.

I’ve had many Naim units, and still think that the best, most reliable vintage is 2000-2007 or so. Sorry for this nuisance of yours.

@MaxBertola sorry to hear and thanks for the comment. The thing is, it does impact the overall performance because the balance is not consistently off to any fixed degree. One day it needs a nudge left, one day a nudge right…

James,
I think that my long, repeated experience with the SN is now over. I’ve found an old ‘review’ (listening impressions, actually) that I wrote years ago for the website of a friend of mine who owns a large audio store, where I tried an XS2 vs my then SN, and the XS2 seemed to win in all categories… So I may well renounce the DAC and move to a different amp.
But the SN3 is a better amp than the SN, perhaps changing the pot will solve the issue. I wish you some peace of mind and of ears.

The contract of warranty his made between you and the dealer so hopefully they will do the right thing here.

Thanks Richard.

If you want a “pur analog” integrated Amp (No dac, no usb, no MM/MC pre inside) just have a try of the Rega Aethos.

Of course if you are looking “Naim only” will be a different story
