SN3, Hicap DR problem

Hi Folks, Its my first post on the forum and unfortunately it’s a problem. I hope someone may be able to help.

My wife bought me a new SN3 for a Christmas present and when I connect it up to my CD player it goes into over current. I am using a HiCap DR and a NDX2 player. Without the CD player, a CD5Si everything works fine. If I disconnect everything except the CD it goes into overcurrent. If the HiCap is not connected all works ok. I don’t know which component is faulty?

Can anyone help.

How is the CD5Si connected to the Supernait 3?

How are you connecting up the HICAP to the Supernait 3?

Welcome to the forum.

I have an SN3 and HiCap.

What do you mean by over current? The HICap is only connected to the SN3 only?

The CD player is connected to the SN3 via the original DIN. When connecting the HICap you shouldn’t have made any changes to the CD player connection?

Hi Richard, I’m using a Din lead but I’ve tried using a good quality RCA lead and its still the same. The hicap is connected by 2 leads to the sn3 after removing the link plug and the cd is connected to the sn3 cd in port

How is the HICAP connected to the Supernait 3?

Is it connected just like this with a SNAIC 4 and SNAIC5? (ignore the Stageline connection).

If using a CD5si into a Supernait 3 like me you will have to change the output setting to RCA if using those “ I do “

Connected exactly as per the diagram above.

What I can’t understand is the NDX and turntable work fine. I’ve tried swapping the cd lead into the the tuner in but that doesn’t work either. The sn3 switches on and off every few seconds and the tuner button flashes which indicates over current.

Yes I did change to phono to test but reset the cd to din after no joy.

Have you tried using a different interconnect? Say, the one from the NDX? Just wondering whether that’s the issue.

I tried to use an RCA lead instead of the din from the cd output but with the same result. I can swap the lead with the NDX2 if you think its worth a try?

Yes, try that.

Otherwise, I wonder whether @NeilS has any idea what is going on here..?

Tried swapping the leads but the problems still there so I think I can rule out connections

It’s an odd one. So you’re saying that only when the CD5Si is connected does the issue occur?

Is the CD5Si connected to a different mains outlet/supply or the same one that feeds the amp etc?

Yes the problems only when the cd is connected. All the equipment is connected to the same mains filter block so earthing shouldn’t be an issue.

Mains filter block?

yes

Have you tried substituting the filter block with an unfiltered one?

Supernait3 ,CD5si,& Radikal. :+1:

no but I can easily test it if you think its worth a try?

This might be helpful (from Gemini):

2. Tripping the “Overcurrent” Protection

The Supernait 3 is highly sensitive to “noise” on its power rails.

The HiCap Connection: When you add a HiCap, it takes over powering the preamp section of the SN3 via SNAIC cables. These cables carry both power and signal.

The Issue: Older CD players or poorly shielded ones can send a “voltage spike” when powered on or off. Because the HiCap/SN3 combo is so transparent and high-speed, this spike can trigger the SN3’s protection circuit (often seen as the Tuner/Mute buttons flashing).

The Fix: Try powering on the CD player before the HiCap and Supernait. If using a non-Naim CD player, ensure you are using high-quality shielded RCA or DIN cables.
