SN3 Right Hand Channel Stopped

Hi.
The right hand channel on my SN3 has suddenly stopped.
I did not hear any bangs, fizz or smell any burning.
I have tried different sources and speaker cables but it is still missing.
I can hear the right hand speaker “pop” when I turn the SN3 and the HicapDR on and off.
Is there anything else I can try before sending it of for repair?
Thank you.

Most likely a relay as it’s a common enough failure, is it still under warranty?

Hi @Hollow

No, it was purchased June 2020.
I have just tried a pair of headphones and I can hear both channels.
Typical, the power button on my NDS has just failed now this. Oh well, these things are sent to try us.

I assume you have tried different sources and it’s the same?

I’d get in touch with your dealer and explain what has happened.

Yes, I have tried CD and bluetooth receiver, still no right hand channel.
I get both channels when using headphones.
Thank you.

Ah, OK. I wonder whether that throws any more light on the issue - @NeilS ?

I think I had the same thing with my Nait XS3 recently, the left channel in my case. Same symptoms, stopped all of a sudden. The cause was a defect speaker relay.

Nicely handled by my dealer and the distributor, took a few weeks, and a mild repair bill.

I’ve had a similar problem with SN3. It’s fixed by turning balance knob around. I meant to clean it up from dust. It might work for you.

Thank you to everybody for their responses.
I have been in contact with my dealer and Naim are going to repair it FOC, even though it is out of warranty by 3 months.

and so they should, there’s too many of these relay failures, presuming that is the actual fault

Yup - smacks of a failed mute relay, as the headphone output is tapped off the preamp stage upstream.

Neil.

Ah is that what it is. Yes without further thought we actually use the mute button every night.
May as well turn the volume down to zero instead, before the other channel mute relay goes.

A couple of weeks ago the power button on my 555PS DR failed, so both will be dropped off at my dealer next week.
Imho owning Naim equipment is like owning a thorough bred race horse, fragile and lots of bills.
Once these are back I will have a think about going back to a " tough as old boots nag".
I have a 25 year old Rotel amp in the garage, covered in dust and still works!!!
Not cross, just disappointed.

SN3 all packed up, as so is the 555 psu, ready for dropping off at the dealers on Monday.
Utilising an old Technics amp that has been in my garage, un used, for 10 years.
Plugged in and away it went without a cough or murmur.
One has to wonder if a Naim amp that has been in garage for 10 years would work " first pull"

I had the same issue, albeit on the other channel. Naim repair was straightforward and also free of charge despite being out of warranty.

My 555dr is rarely turned off. And i wonder if that is the issue? Perhaps we need a monthly routine to exercise those naim power buttons?

Hi @Thegreatroberto

Due to the cost of electricity I do not leave any equipment permanently switched on.
So, in my case, switching it off everyday probably upset it.

Bugger. That’s my theory done. I tend to leave my 555dr powering my ndx2 and scdr powering my 252 on. Turning off my non naim power amp.

And I now realise one should use the mute button only sparsely to save the XS/SN mute relays.

Permanently on here, amp doesn’t take that much power (the Radikal 1 does however), and we somehow ended up using mute every night as the fancy button is there…

Goes to show how one doesn’t give everything a thought (until something like losing a channel happens), but volume to 0 also works, so now back to our Nait 2 habits.

An update.

I picked my SN3 and CD 555 PS DR from my dealer during the first week of this month.
The SN3 now has its right channel back.
The 555 worked for a week and the the power button failed.
Naim “forgot” to fit a new power button while it was being serviced!!!
So, back it goes for Naim to have another go!!!
45 minute round trip each time to the dealer.
Not impressed.
