Solidsteel Fill Or Not

whereas I have the stands, changed from DALI M601 to SS6 and the ATC SCM11’s completely opened up the soundstage as well as giving a more dynamic presentation.

I can’t say if they are resonant nor non-resonant as I am not measuring, but in sound terms they are a step up from most other stands I have used.

Remind me TLR do you have your SS6’s filled or not?

absolutely not. my SCM11 sparkle fed from my incredibly special NN50.

That’s what I thought TLR

Doesn’t make sense to me why someone would say they are not a good design

who cares; mine sound fantastic.

Yeah snap… we love ‘em

I have always found Linn Kan 2 speaker stands to be fantastic, have you compared them to Solidsteel ?

No Igel not ever compared, maybe a bit too tall for our 19’s… they would have probably been perfect for the LS 3/5a’s I owned some years ago though

I love the design of the Solidsteel tripods

I see,yes works very well for the LS5/5a also :+1:

So SS do recommend filling the SS6/7 stands or at least the references from Bologna University do… I thought so, as that matched with my subjective assessment as well, which seemed to align with the Bologna University hypotheses. I filled to 50 to 60% with atabites.

I understand the weight of the speaker has a bearing on the resonance damping as well.

When I had my LS 3/5a’s I used Partington Dreadnoughts and they worked well together

Well certainly the 19’s are quite heavy SiS

At the moment I’m not going to fill the SS5’s but have some kiln dried sand waiting if I feel the need

They are, I use my ATCs on wooden open frame and open frame Something Solid stands… I thought they sounded great… quite sprightly. But to my ears the SS6s sounded better part filled. I demoed filled and not filled at my dealers. Filling reigned in the upper mids a bit, that could get a just a little tiring or glary on some high energy recordings on the unfilled stands

I’m guessing there’s know way you could fill your open frame stands even if you wanted to?

Correct, they were solid steel I think .. ie no hollow cavity…. At least no accessible cavity… By design. The Solid Steel stands have relatively large tubular cavities… although not as easy as it should be to fill.

There is such a tiny (8mm) spike hole if I wanted to fill the SS5’s so it’d be a long process

At the moment I’m leaving them as they are as they sound so good

I see,I found them to make speakers sound slower than Linn Kan 2 stands.

Yes tedious is the word I would use. My dealer helped me, thanks Andy, he fashioned a funnel out of stiff paper

My LS 3/5a’ sounded so good when I had them I don’t think it mattered too much what was under them Igel

I have found a small funnel I could use but in no rush to do it…. Also if I filled them a bit and didn’t like how they sounded I’ve got no idea how I’d remove the filling afterwards
