Favourite cafe on Soap Street - would that be the legendary This and That Indian cafe?!
I see Mike has beaten me to it!
Much better at Maine Road - “look after your car, mister?”. I said, “no, I’m not getting out of my car” ![]()
I only went to Maine Road to photograph a charity game with one of the sponsors and some old city players- Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee etc
Got a tour of the ground and trophy room etc and free tickets to a 1st division match with the sponsors.
I developed the film at home and had the results quicker than the Manchester Evening News
The MEN reporter wasn’t impressed ![]()
Slide show at the clubhouse next to the grounds.
A jolly little number.
Hah, I saw they play! Still got my MC scarf!

My dad always used to take me to Broughton baths. It’s still there too!
Remember that on the odd occasions when Dad was driving…. ![]()
My mate Pete was responsible on the ground for the rehab of Eastlands. Could have been fantastic but some people had their pockets filled by developers and were very much influenced accordingly as to lowering expectations of what could have been achieved.
My abiding memory of Maine Road was a Rod Stewart gig. That and the legendary Man City 0 Wrexham 0 during which our useless keeper had the game of his life and saved with, quite literally, his face, arse and elbow.
Despite being with two City fans we were chased through the streets.
Been going to This And That for 20 odd years. This And That plus Vinyl Exchange makes a cracking afternoon outing. Manchester does excellent record shops.
Ever pop into The Dover for a cheeky pint and a game of pool?
Landlord in the mid 90s was the husband of an unqualified social worker on our team. We got free sandwiches and the locals got cleared off the pool table so we could play. They glowered for hours and used to follow us home as far as they could.
Now here we’ll have to disagree. Does anywhere have staff as miserable looking as Piccadilly Records?
Says much about VE that I sold them my vinyl in 1995 and they still have some of it on sale.
There was a fine “Chinese” restaurant around Piccadilly Gardens that we frequented. Name something like “Kwok Man”? Ring any bells?
Otherwise we staked out the Plaza Cafe on Upper Brook Street, for the infamous “half chicken biryani”.
Tbf every s/h record shop struggles to sell their Cliff Richard albums ![]()

Far too close to home
There is a song on the new Half Man Half Biscuit album titled “Goodbye Sam, Hello Samaritans”.
That inevitably put me in mind of that famous Trans anthem from Cliff of “Goodbye Sam, Hello Samantha”. Mrs. H. could not recall so I found it online for her. Stuck in my head now.
Made 10x worse by my singing as “Smanfa” in the style of Byron/Paris from the superb “What It Feels Like For A Girl”.
Salford wasnt somewhere I frequented, a night out with the lads would be in ‘town’.
The Square Albert and around there. This was a long time ago, though.
On the early 1970s my gran used to work at the cafeteria halfway up the CIS building. The head chef was an angry looking scot who used to chase me (about 6 years old at the time) out of the kitchen. The ‘quarp’ as it was pronounced by mancs back then ![]()
Closed eight years ago because perpetual roadworks were killing them.
Ah yes. Been several things since then but was only really hugely popular when it was the Square Albert and town hall staff couldn’t squeeze into The Vine et al.
Mike, like I said earlier, today has been a real treat.
On the few occasions in the past when I drove into Manchester from the Wigan direction along the M62, as I hit Salford, I always put Shadowplay on by Joy Division and PLAY IT LOUD.
Must say this wasn’t the direction I saw for the thread but I’ve really enjoyed it.
Loved Broughton baths, a revelation compared to Seedley baths.
