Sound blips at start of Hi Res tracks

I have an odd issue where if I select a track from a hi res album it will sometimes have a blip or stutter of sound before continuing with the track. It doesn’t happen every time, but mostly it does. If I play the album from the beginning, all tracks play normally. 16 bit tracks and albums play normally.
I use a Uniti Star with files on a NAS and the Star connects with wifi as it isn’t practical to have an Ethernet connection in my flat. Uniti Star diagnostics says the wifi is: Channel = 6, -42 dBm, 144 Mbps, so that appears to be good enough as far as I can tell. A wifi analyser shows channel 6 to be a good one. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

I tread very carefully here as I am not a streamer (yet). It appears to me to be a latency issue and a congested wifi system which maybe used by other devices sharing channel 6. I know you have stated it is not practical to have a wired ethernet connection. Though there are attractive surface ducts available to run such a cable on the surface around skirting boards and the like.

I think it might be your only way out and possibly call a few ethernet wiring contractors to see if they have an attractive solution. Tradesman that wire your local historical churches maybe a start. Though they are usually in high demand because of their skills and might be able to put you onto someone.

But the second generation streamers should buffer several minutes of audio and then start playing, so unless this is not what is happening your theory makes little sense.
There are a somewhat similar issue with a small drop in tracks at the end of the track for some users, this could be becuase the buffer is being filled and this causes the bag to happen. The problem is that this only happens on some systems some times.

Sorry for responding. There were over a hundred views and no responses. I am relying on setting up playstation networks for my children when ADSL was all the go via an Apple Extreme router.

That’s only if it works though Claus and in this case it clearly isn’t.

@Chris-T if you have anything else plugged in to the streamer other than the basics, e.g. USB or Bluetooth antenna have you tried removing them, then do the usual factory reset (check to see if your Presets or playlists are affected).

Other suggestion would be to temporarily test using a power line Wi-Fi extender to rule out the link conditions.

When you say hi-res, what bit depth and khz rate are you talking about? What size are the tracks that you’re trying to play when you select a new track?

Do you have a separate music server, or are you using a uPNP server running on your NAS? It might be that with the hi-res albums the NAS doesn’t have enough CPU to stream the file cleanly.

WiFi might be an issue here, but you would need use your wifi analyser app to see what is happening on the channels being used when the file starts streaming.

Do you have any streaming services that offer hi-res files (Qobuz or Tidal)? If so, do they have any similar symptoms.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. The problem only occurs if I randomly select tracks from albums. There isn’t an issue if I play an album from beginning to end.

Nothing else is plugged into the streamer, and Qobuz plays fine. I have noticed that Minimserver is the only uPNP server with the issue. Asset plays fine. I prefer Minimserver as it is far better for all music, and Asset is rather poor for classical. Any 24 bit track seems to be affected but it is random. I am not transcoding any tracks. The tracks are mostly short, 3 to 6 minute ones.

Hi Chris, have you raised the issue on the MinimServer forum? It’s a friendly place and the developer of Minim, Simon Nash, often responds to posts there himself.

Thanks! I will do some more checks of MinimServer vs Asset tonight Roger. If the situation still seems the same, I will raise it on the MinimServer forum, as you suggest

And a few posts down this could well be caused by third party upnp server.
