Speaker build - CNO4

They could, and with a cnc router it would be a pretty a quick job. However there is still a fair bit of equipment involved in the assembly and finishing process - look back at the tools and space @Mark84 used for this, too.

It’s also quite challenging to ship pre-cut panels, especially with material as heavy yet delicate as MDF, without risking damage.

I know the assembly and everything else after I s still a major job. Just wondering about it all.

There must be a lot of pride attached to listening to speakers you’ve built yourself too.

Agreed. @Mark84 you mentioned your 11 year old son helping you shift them (as best an 11 year old can!).

My Dad put together a pair of KEF floor standing speakers with MDF in the early 80s. Years later they were my first speakers for the kit amplifier I made for a walkman. Not as heavy as yours, mind!

Good memories! My dad is also a DIY guy. Amps too. He used to use me for testing different cables etc!

I’d definitely recommend a first timer build a rectangular cabinet speaker. Unless you have experience or access to a workshop. I think there would be a greater chance of success. There are many builders on the website that have taken years to finish a construction. It is great fun… You do get a lot of pride from it. Although, if you are the type of person that is critical, as I am, you better make sure you take the time and get it right or you are forever staring at your mistakes! This is the first of 5 pairs that I have been completely satisfied with in terms of construction and aesthetics. Troels’s speakers always sound good but the way they look is down to the builder.
I would advise any prospective builder to just read through the site for a few months and pick up all the little details that make for a good speaker construction. Chamfering the back of driver holes, properly sealing Separate cabinets and cable holes, routing sequence for driver holes etc. There are lots of articles on there about these things and they have been really helpful for me.
If I had to recommend a simple but very effective speaker that I believe would compete with many expensive floor standers way above its cost, it’d be the scan speak Ekta mk II. Haven’t heard it but I’d be willing to bet that it sounds awesome and wouldn’t disappoint.

Absolutey agree with all that advice Mark. I wouldn’t attempt anything like yours without having tried a simpler box design first. Nobody gets far trying to run before they can walk!

It might never happen but it’s planted a seed if nothing else. :sunglasses:

Cheers, Rack.

“He used to use me for testing different cables” …Not mains I hope !

Great advice Mark :sunglasses: Exactly what I’m going to do, read through Troel’s site in depth and then decide if it’s for me.

Maybe it was mentioned elsewhere, but can you say something about the sound? Is it comparable to any commercial speaker brands we might know off?

Hard to compare and describe sound. What I can say is that they are incredibly natural and uncoloured. Very low distortion even when played loud. Everything just seems to stay separated and crisp. The bass is deep and clean and the highs are never edgy now I have adjusted tweeter properly. Mids are silky smooth and crystal clear. I have recorded a video and put it on you tube. Have a listen with some good headphones. These are playing quite loud but effortlessly. I know you can’t really tell the quality from a video but I upload it for potential builders.

Not a criticism in any way, the two tracks you have chosen are among the ones I used when I first got and demonstrated my ow longstanding amp. The very equipment centred friend, after about and hour said, “You have deliberately chosen music to show the best of your system”. As I pointed out to him much of the choice was moderate because my attached neighbour was on shifts and gets up at three in the morning.
Next time he came I can remember Fanfare For The Common Man, Poulenc Organ Concerto and the track I now use to check and demonstrate bass, Botanical Roots from Black Uhuru, Anthem.

Yes for sure they are well recorded songs. They record well on a phone also. I can’t find that common man one can you send a picture of the cover? There are so many versions it seems.

My classical vinyl is boxed up, I’m fairly sure I have more than one copy and they are the Bernstein/New York Philharmonic and the Copland Conducts versions.

Thanks for sharing the videos. I am not knowledgable about the Uniti series.

Couple numpty questions

  1. What is the device lower right of rack with lighted green end and red end.

  2. Why on the Uniti does the SRV track light the Atom screen periodically ( but not on the DS cut)

  3. Was there a window behind your position. On the SRV track, pretty sure there was movement reflected on your widescreen right to left at the same time hearing on the video sound of a car passing by outside. Or maybe its the prescription drugs at 4:41 am in PDX.

  4. A favorite Dire Straits track, cut short and missed the definitive moment later in the song when acoustic guitar featured left channel (facing) then straight to the right channel featuring an electric solo as the song builds momentum. Love that part, but not sure the phone would have conveyed that ( i don’t own a cell phone).

Hard to tell on a phone/video through my meager system and headphones, but I think I did sense the balance you achieved. Everything in perfect proportion, I have never really heard that quite like that before.

That was fun, thanks for sharing. I take more meds around 10 am, I will listen again, and again and again. Jeff A

Which album and song from Stevie Ray is that?

Not meaning to jump Mark84 reply but according to the youtube narrative it is song “Tin Pan Alley” from album Couldn’t Stand The Weather.

I hate looking at peoples self built furniture let alone the quality of the loudspeakers on here. It just makes me realise how inadequate My woodworking skills are.

Hi, thanks for watching.

To answer your questions.

  1. That device is a Nintendo switch (kids game console).

  2. The screen is set to always off currently and when you adjust the volume the screen comes back on. I think I adjusted the volume in that track.

  3. Yes you are correct there is a windows about 3/4 meters behind the couch and as it is warm here we have the windows open for the most of the year. We do have security/insect screens covering through. This does help with sound reproduction too as the open windows act like absorbers/diffusers. Can’t remember which.

  4. Sorry about cutting it short but just wanted to keep to a reasonable length as I didn’t think people would watch the whole thing anyway.

Thanks for the comments you are right you can’t really hear much. I just do it for the prospective builders perusing Troels’s site. There isn’t much out there in the way of reviews. I have thought about doing a video review but Im a bit camera shy!
