Speakers that sound good at low volumes

Heared and liked them at a local dealer … really good! Thought they must go well with naim
Very nice finish
Mr fink was in the design of the ovators involved - but I think everyone knows

Love the look of those Finks.

I very much preferred the sound of the Kim over the bigger model.
They look really good.

I’m really enjoying the Guru 12’s, which also do a great job at low volumes.

Mine are pretty close to the rear wall, angled in towards the listening position, and there’s a third pair suspended from the ceiling behind the sofa, which is my listening position. I don’t notice the infamous ‘sweet spot’ - in this configuration, at least.

They are much more ‘listener friendly’ than their reputation suggests.

That’s good to know. I suspect having six rather than two helps with the sweet spot issue, though I’m surprised you can get them to work well close to the front wall. The typical recommendation seems to be that they need to be two to four feet out.

That’s because they are dipoles, also radiating backwards. But as the distance from front wall that counts is to the front face of the speaker, I suspect 2-4 feet encompasses the distances used for the majority of speaker setups, though with their width ESLs might appear more dominating, especially with stacked pairs.

I’m going the opposite way and going to throw out a speaker that DOESN’T sound good at low volumes - KEF LS50s. I moved them upstairs due to some basement work and can’t get them above 35-40 on the UQ volume in the evening. May be a factor of the UQ, but at low volume they’re quite lifeless. At 50 and above, they’re ok.

Wow … habe i missed a Thread ? Have you build new and bigger ones.
Impressive :star_struck:

Still impressed with 606 sounding great at low volumes with 135, even with the lower sensitivity of the 606

They aren’t actually bigger than the last pair. Technically they are smaller in terms of internal volume, but I do prefer them. I had built these originally but then sold them on. I missed them so decided to build another pair.

I had good luck at low volume with ProAc Studio 100, KEF R300, Monitor Audio Gold something or other

The Borg is an acquired taste aesthetically. Having seen them, they look good, but I’ve not compared how they sound. Out of interest I should give them a listen when I’ve got an afternoon free - my dealer have a pair in their showroom

Agreed.

It always floored me that the Borg bothered to put on lipstick after a self regeneration.

A sentence is suddenly in my mind „… for an android an eternity.“ :grinning:

What position in the room do the speakers need? Near the backwall or more space around them…? I have a 4x4 metre room. They look good…

Hi, the manual says 50 cm from the front wall and one meter from side walls. Mine have a bit more space around them and sound great. I don’t have the KEF Cube equalizer but would like to experiment someday.

Thank you for your response. I have limited space for my speakers. I’m very locked in to the placement and my task is to get them angled in place. My right speaker has limited space, max 40 cm to the side wall, whereas my left has 1 metre and 70 cm of space. It sounds almost like an impossible task.
My system is Nac-N272 and NAP250
