I had understood that from your previous comments, however the one thing that I was still puzzled about was that in your opening post you said you had concluded they are just to big to accommodate anymore in the house, and I was wondering what had changed to make you feel that? Or is it that you’ve only recently moved into the house and have been trying to find how to accommodate them?
When I heard them at a Naim dem I was only a few seat rows away - in a hotel room.
Oh, I have tried them out just they are completely visually overwhelming with children and a very understanding wife to consider. We have an open plan living space at the back of the house that could accommodate them but that’s not where our main system lives and I can’t run them off an Naim Atom ( could you imagine that post?) . As we have recently redecorated I decided not to put them back hence my decision to store them for now in the garage.
So does that mean you you have a vague thought that maybe when the children have grown up you might reinstate them? If so l, and they are your endgame speakers then preserving them makes every sense.
Indeed, plus I know how they have been looked after and their full history since new. I know they just need to go but it’s not always that easy especially when there are so few around.
Like a lot of good things in life, probably not worth knocking it until you have tried it.
Sometimes an open mind is needed!
I’d get some XPS rigid foam insulation to put under them if you have a concrete garage floor instead of the plywood, it’s cheap, just score it with a box cutter to the size you need and then snap it. Make sure it’s eXtruded PolyStyrene not Expanded PolyStyrene - XPS is totally moisture tight, EPS is not.
I don’t know what they call this stuff in the UK but it looks like this -
Oh - and don’t place bubble wrap directly against the wood veneer - you’ll regret it, after a while bubble wrap can leave bubble marks on the finish, always let wood breathe.
It would be careful to check the “aroma” of the garage.
If it has the usual whiff of most garages - petrol, paint thinners, damp, fust, other combustibles - then the speakers will soak it up.
Next time the speakers eventually end up in a system, the listening room will smell like the garage.
His garage looks like surgery could be performed in there.
Garyi, slightly off topic, and you are going to hate me for saying this but I had to remove all the acoustic panels I put up behind my DBL’s. It killed the dynamics and ended up making the lower mids/upper bass sound very odd. Even running a single strip between the speakers up the wall caused some problems, so I had to go back to the original flat plaster board walls again. I can imagine the acoustic panels doing wonders if placed behind you but they just didn’t work behind my DBL’s. I say this as I remember you have problems with the non- standard X-over you have. Maybe that’s not the problem?
No the only issue I had was the fact I have two 15in drivers in a standard uk living room. This has been completely fixed with some room correction.
My back wall panels are not the off the shelf things you buy they are essentially boxes with sound damping in them and faced with the vertical slats. Combined with the ceiling sound defraction and absorption panels I have never heard it so good.
In fairness those back panels were for when I had nbls. My feeling is the vast baffle of dbls would make them less necessary. But I like how they look and the integration of the tv and the fact it hides all the wires
The garage is where I hide from the wife and children, it’s hoovered regularly and never gets dirty or smelly. ( my ocd wouldn’t allow it).
I have decided I will probably sell them on, as I can’t see me getting to use them in the next few years especially in this house. Reading the comments on this post has made me realise I could end up damaging them or degrading them without even knowing it. They are safe and sound for now and I’m in no rush at all, I will remove the bubble wrap and cover them with a cotton sheet then add the blankets. I can’t imagine any dealer would want to take them on as px so I will try and find a home for them privately. There warm, safe and better looked after than my car at the moment so there’s no rush.
