Another vote for the Cambridge Audio MXN10 if you don’t need a box with a display (never really got my head round the need for such a thing). Lovely app and does everything. Small footprint so can be hidden away if need be and the 4 presets are really useful. Top buy!
Coax and optical digital out if you wanted to get a separate DAC as well.
I heard a Bluesound earlier in the year , it sounded really good - when paired with a Chord Qutest , my advice would be get a Blusound now and pair with a DAC and then maybe upgrade the DAC as time goes on
@Fabmalt , why not get a BluSound or a WiiM and pair it with an iFi Dac , wide range and at most price points, and then work your way up the food chain (as it were)
Until fairly recently my streaming setup was a Primare NP5 network streamer feeding a Chord Hugo mk1 via optical. Bought used (no choice in the Chord Hugo mk1’s case) that would be within budget I think, and sounded excellent. To my ears better than a ND5 XS2 when auditioned with my system installed in a dealer’s listening room. It isn’t as easy to use as an all-in-one streamer/DAC, but the SQ was very good.
For various reasons I now run a Chord TT2 into Chrome Bumper kit, but the Primare/Chord/XS3 was a very very good system.
In my view the Wiim Pro Plus DAC is not very good. As a digital source with a separate DAC the Wiim would be OK. An entry level Innuos would be better.
Finally, after discussing with my family (negotiating would say some ) I need to consider the easiest interface and so go for a display as feature for my streamer.
So, I will go the suggested 2-step way by some of you : a decent streamer (with display and good interface) + an external good DAC.
As far as I can see on the market (around 1k€) it makes : CXN100, WiiM Ultra, DMP-A6, Bluesound Icon and to come the FiiO S15 maybe.
For the DAC, it could come later on with new budget if the streamer is too expansive
I have listened to the Bluesound Icon and it is a big step up from the Node. It has dual ESS Sabra dacs and a 5 in screen, It should be in your budget, it is $999 USD
I will recommend Wiim Mini, less than $100, you will be surprised how good it sounds, only thing is you need to have Tidal subscription and use the Tidal Connect. The sound from the Wiim app itself is no good, but through the Tidal Connect, that opens a whole different world for the SQ
