Streaming from Qobuz

If I go through the Qobuz link in the NAIM app, my albums (“Releases”) can’t be arranged in “Artist” or “Album” order, the list just appears to be unalterably random.

Is it possible to stream to my ND5XS2 directly from the Qobuz app?

Yes, using Qobuz Connect.

Got it! Ta. Now I’ve got a decent app to use for playback of my Library instead of the rubbish NAIM version.

a bit harsh - i find qobuz connect does have some useful extra features - but the naim app isn’t that bad

Well, I think what OP’s trying to say is that it isn’t good enough anymore. The Naim App works, but UI-wise I feel it is getting more and below par. But I agree that rubbish is quite harsh. Looking at the Naim app where it comes to Qobuz it lacks a lot of the features that the latest Qobuz app offers. I only use the Naim app for switching output.

It also might be the case that Qobuz is not making some features available to third party developers.

Qobuz Connect has been an amazing upgrade. Preferred over my streamer’s app below.

Could be. Quite logical to let the Qobuz app have more advantages.

Manufacturer apps will die out (or turn into simple remote controls). Hardware will simply have the API’s to connect with the major streaming services and maybe Roon.

The commercial logic is unstoppable - h/w customers don’t value functions that are duplicated or done better in their streaming app and businesses concentrate on what they do best and gives them competitive advantage.

Once Antipodes implement Qobuz Connect I doubt I’ll use anything else - unless I miss the explorer aids of Roon too much.

I was a dedicated naim app man for streaming from my uniti core and Tidal for many years. I tried Quobuz connect on a free trial and wouldn’t dream of using the naim app now (other than for streaming my rips and downloads on the core). Quobuz connect as a UI gets a big thumbs up from me :+1:

Yep, agree with @badger1963, this is the way I have gone too. Q-connect for streaming and the Naim app for Naim streamer specific actions.
Will be interesting to see how apps develop over the coming years between those from streaming service providers and hardware manufacturers.

This post has made me try Qobuz connect after years of using the Naim app. I am stunned how much better the user experience is and how outdated the Naim app is compared to it. I will not go back to using the Naim app for sure.
Thanks for pointing it out!

Has anyone compared the SQ vs the Naim app?

That’s a scary thought! How will I then play music from my NAS — most of my listening?

Some of us still buy downloads, rip CDs etc. I do, because I want to support artists, because there is music which is not available on Qobuz and because all streaming services are rubbish at organising Classical music. I also find local streaming also generally sounds better.

I do use Qobuz Connect and think it is very good, but I find some of the criticism of the Naim app excessive. It’s a means to an end: find the music I want to listen to as efficiently as possible, then get out of the way. Searching what is offered by Qobuz is a weak point, I agree, but I suspect that’s a function of Qobuz’s API rather than Naim not being up to the mark.

The lure to a Naim streamer for me would be iRadio.

As for music streaming services, it’s like email & calendars for me. I always use the software designed by the email provider.

Qobuz Connect has levelled the playing field. I’ll
be keeping my Streaming Dac.

As Qobuz don’t do internet radio, I guess there is no business in it for them to do so, then a market for the naim app continues in my mind as I like access to internet radio.

However, I will agree with you if you say that customers will use locally ripped files less and less, preferring the streaming services. I think there is supporting evidence for this at Innuos where the Zen products with local storage are being superseded by Stream products without local storage for ripped music files. Admittedly, you can add storage to the Stream product if needed. Continue that argument further and arrive at Qobuz stopping the sale of files to download at some point in the future, there is no point downloading if you are always going to be a subscriber.

Arguably, this thread is getting slightly off-topic, but I had a conversation with my brother yesterday. He streams primarily from a UPnP server to various B&O speakers. He told me that the most recent “upgrade” to the B&O app at first did not work with UPnP servers at all. B&O did provide an update, which worked with UPnP servers but only allowed him to choose one song at a time - no complete albums. B&O’s response - find another controller app. Fortunately, my brother had one, JRemote which works with JRiver, his server software.

B&O always were a bit left-field in the way they did things!

Really though, I’m not unduly worried that I’ll lose local streaming anytime soon. For one thing, there’s quite a bit of interoperability between streamers and control apps of different manufacturers. Several manufacturers use the OpenHome platform: Auralic, Linn, Lumin, for example and an app from one will generally control a streamer from another. Naim isn’t OpenHome, but can be rendered OH compatible by running the free Bubble UPnP server app on the network. That allows Naim streamers to be controlled with other OpenHome apps, though not vice versa.

Yes, I did when Connect was launced.
I prefer the soundquality of the Naim platform/app.
