Thanks for that. I was favouring the Limetree but Sounds like I might prefer the Primare. For less than the price of the Limetree I could get the NP5+MCRU PSU upgrade.
My original plan was to go with a used Node2i but the more I look into it, there are some good options out there and the NDS certainly deserves more than cheap and cheerful.
Just asked AI but not completely clear. I know the Limetree Bridge II doesn’t support DSD but can it deal with DOP - I realise it’s still DSD maybe it passes that through to the NDS that then converts it?
A Moon Mind 2 performs ‘better’ than all of those listed. Usually available used for £1000-£1200. Compact, internal power supply, incredibly stable and reliable. Moon app is OK, but supports Connect. I use one with Roon with no problems. Qobuz Connect works well (unlike with a Lindemann Woodnote Solo I tried)
Spotify isn’t officially supported on the Innuos streamers. Spotify Connect is available via a 3rd party LMS plugin, but this can be a bit unpredictable IME (see disclaimer on Innuos’ website).
Still, an Innuos Zen 3 set up in server mode and streaming Tidal gives a decent uplift to the NDS.
Got a NP5 Mk2 as an experiment / agree it’s more refined and better overall into NDS than NDS bare / haven’t tried others so won’t comment there. Haven’t heard whether it will support the forthcoming Spotify HiFi - does anyone know?
Does the NDS support the old iPhone USB input? On the original generation streamers, this was a pretty good option, and you could get started that way and see how you get on. Free or nearly so if you decided to get an older device to leave in place… Just an outside-the-box suggestion to test things and see how you get on, knowing lossless play on phone app will be one of the first available.
I’ve got a project CD Box E connected via digital RCA to the NDS so I’ll swap in my Node2i when I can get lossless. That should give me a benchmark for something better. I tried Tidal in the past on the NDS but was not overly impressed. I think because Spotify 320bps was pretty good (and still is). It’s only because I can tell the difference between that and the CD that I’m even bothering with Spotify lossless. As vinyl is my preferred source I could actually stay as I am but boys and their toys and all that
As both Naim and Bluesound have said that they have had support for Spotify lossless built in for some time, perhaps the other hardware suppliers are ahead of the game as well?
Yes, all the 1st gen streamers including the NDS are Apple certified to work via the USB input (as is NDAC). This dates back to when iPods were all the rage and offered people a way to use them, so it’s really intended to work with iTunes/Apple Music but can usually be coaxed into playing from third party app too.
I prefer local streaming from Pulse vs NDS. To my old ears it is cleaner and more analitical and without side effects, but these are subtle differences. I can live with both presentations with no complains. Pulse wins hands down in stability. I often do a lot of track hopping. The NDS kept freezing (each time, eventually), Pulse never does. I switch back to NDS for multiroom with Qute and internet radio. It is nice to have this choice. I use Chord Signature to connect Pulse to NDS. I belive it helps a lot.
