Stubble Shaver, Razor or Clippers?

I think I got one of the cheaper models a few years ago and absolutely hated it as it really irritated my skin - small form factor rechargeable thing from memory but it’s gone somewhere with my missing socks. May have been usable wet and dry (eg in shower).

I’d try it again if I could find it!

Bought a new bottle last week.

I guess it’s a beard trimmer. It can be adjusted to different depths by applying different fixed combs, or an adjustable comb. With no comb applied it manages a passable clean shave.
The blade is of a reciprocating type (think hedge trimmer) and replaceable when it wears. In my case I get through a couple of blades a year.

The Panasonic MuliJobbie with its three attachments ( if that’s what Willie means by “fixed combs”?) coupled with its integral adjuster will, apparently, give you nearly fifty lengths…….

@Alley_Cat and @anon77199223 so I’m not the only one then.

I find trimming down to 1mm of stubble or having a month of beard is my default position since forever. A Gillette and smooth shave for weddings and funerals.

I’d not call it designer stubble. I’m just a burly type. Always have been.

Here’s a selfy

“… And I’m okay…”

No problem with a Wahl here, admittedly I don’t do my face but my neck.

As @Nick1940 said lube up

I use one of those 5 blade electric razors to keep my head naked and a cheap beard trimmer set on 1 for that (apparently much hated) stubble beard look. Good thing is Mrs Pete likes it and I’m not dating @Innocent_Bystander :rofl:

I’ve had a bottle of that Wahl clipper blade oil for 2 decades.

Still quite a bit left.

Still a bit stumped on which clipper or trimmer to get.

One of the cheaper Phillips shavers with the clipper attachment has served me well for the past decade. Nowadays the latter works well on the head too.I tend to use a mix though. Shave twice a week and use the clippers to bring it down to stubble. Defending on my mood I’ll then either leave it as is; wet shave or use the shaver with its normal two blades to get a smooth finish.

Have always found that getting a decent shave costs far more than getting a decent stubble.

Replace this is helpful to anyone else I bought the Wahl Super Taper corded and it was rubbish so I sent it back.

(Beware of the company Trojan Electronics/Trustu that made it very hard for me to send it back).

I’ve now ordered the Wahl Senior so I’ll soon find out what that’s like.

Okay, I Finally have a Very positive result.

I have bought and will keep the Wahl senior cordless clippers.

The body is mainly made of metal as you can see from the photos below, with just a very solid plastic cover on one side.

The cordless aspect of them an improvement on my previous corded clippers Because you can just use them freely and I’m not tethered to a plug.

Unlike the cheaper Wahl clippers I tried these ones are really solidly made and gave me a great stubble trim before I’d even oiled them.

I didn’t oil them because I didn’t want to make them unreturnable if they didn’t work properly out of the box.

They are quite expensive, but well worth it because the other Cheaper ones are designed to become obsolescent or useless.

I bought them from an online company called cool Blades, which have good feedback on trustpilot and a well written website and return policy – much better than wahl’s own website and return policy.

Very nice choice. I was looking at the senior and the Magic a couple of months ago and couldn’t decide.

Looks nice but also looks heavy.
I do my clipping business standing in the shower.
I have had similar which often ended being dropped on a toe.

I just want to trim back of the neck hairs, sideburns and eyebrows, in between hairdresser visits. Don’t know whether to get trimmer or clipper.

These clippers are too big to do fine work like around your eyebrows and nose and ears and so on.

They’re Excellent for the hair on your head, for your beard if you don’t want a perfect clean shave, and other large areas.

I have a tiny little mini strimmer type thing That I’ve had for years that is specifically designed for things like eyebrows, ears, and nose.

As regards the back of one’s neck, I’m not sure how anyone can do that by themselves without making a mess of it.

It doesn’t feel heavy to me.

It feels lighter than my previous corded ones because of the lack of cable pulling on the device while you’re trying to move it across your face.

I am a lifelong rock climber, so frankly, I do have strong hands and forearms, but it feels perfect to me weight wise.

I certainly wouldn’t take this device into the shower with me, and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t allow being washed with water either.

I think periodically, you need to take the blades off and they provide you with a brush to clean out the clippers inside of hair.

Incidentally, one extra benefit over the corded versions is that this set of clippers does not have a Phillips head screw opening on the side to adjust for voltage, which takes away that piece of complexity so there’s no need to tune them because they work off a battery.

An extra benefit is that you can just go in the garden to do your shaving and then mother nature takes care of recycling the bits of hair, so you don’t need to spend ages trying to clear up your bathroom after having a shave.
