Sub and a 272

This is probably a numpty question, how would I run a sub from my 272 pre?

If your sub has a suitable low level input, connect it to one of the preamp outputs (DIN or RCA) on the 272.
If it has a high level input, you can connect it to your loudspeakers. Depending on what power amp you use, you may be able to connect it to the power amp speaker output sockets, although connecting to the loudspeaker input terminals if usually preferable with a Naim power amp.

Currently using the rca out into active speakers so possibly use din to rca on a sub?

Yes, that would work. If the sub requires a long cable you should look for a ‘slugged’ one (with a resistor fitted to it) to maintain stability of the preamp. Naim used to supply such a cable, and possibly still do, as do some other cable suppliers.

Using a sub with active speakers can be tricky. There are a few subs specifically designed to be used with active speakers where you run line level output cables (usually balanced XLR) from your preamp to the sub, which has line level outputs to connect to your speakers. ATC’s C4 is an example.

Otherwise, follow @ChrisSU’s advice.
