Super sensitive phono

My turntable started to hum a bit today so I started to conduct different checks to eliminate the source. I have noticed that when I rest the needle on the platter and tap even very lightly on anything it produces noise similar to when you tap a microphone. This happens mostly at higher volumes, around 11-12 o’clock. I understand that some level of noise when doing this is expected but it’s to the point that when I press a button on my Macintosh that sits on the same rack I can hear it through the speakers. I have checked this on both phonos and both tone arms. It seems like the whole rack is a one giant microphone. Has anyone noticed that on their system?

Sounds like an earth loop hum
But the other sounds like microphone etc are normal as the cartridge is a transducer and if near speakers with high volume might induce feedback.

Thanks Skeptikal. It’s the microphone like noise that in mostly concern about. It’s so sensitive it picks up my footsteps from 15ft away! Is that normal?

This is quite normal.
The hum is a different matter.

Audio or skipping? I take it you have a suspended floor?

I think I have eliminated the hum now. So I guess the microphonic noise is normal then?

Can you hear the footsteps while the record is playing or can you just see the speaker drivers flapping a bit.

I can’t hear when a record is playing but I can see the drivers flapping a bit when it’s not playing.

Might have to put the turntable on something like a wall shelf.

From the description the turntable is getting feedback through the surface it is placed on. If it is picking up footsteps and taps on the plinth you can hear it will also transmit frequencies you cannot and helping to smear or blur the sound when playing records. This can be corrected by a number of methods.

The simplest but not always possible depending on circumstances is to have a shelf fixed to a solid wall for the turntable to go on. You can also try an isolation platform under the TT/isolation feet but if it is as severe as you describe it will not eliminate the problem but may help dampen the effects.

If it is the floor at fault and you cannot put the TT on a shelf some bracing of the floor where the TT is place could help but this will start to become more intrusive on your room.

If possible it may help to brace whatever your TT is on to a wall to make it less susceptible to the floor movement.

It could take a combination of the above and other tactics but without a more specific description of what you have your TT on and its surroundings, it is hard to be specific.

At 32kg, I’m surprised you’re having footfall feedback.

The issue have resolved itself by… re-plugging and redressing all cables  I still get some feedback but it’s 10 percent of what it was. Thank you all for the help.

Sometime I wish I had a one box solution like Nova PE :weary:

No you don’t…

I don’t when there are no issues with it  how do you find your Allnic phono? I hope to treat myself to a new one this Christmas.

But once it’s moving…

Go ahead and do it- it’s a great phono stage. Best when run balanced…

I had a similar problem some years ago which I resolved by using fully-shielded interconnect cables between tt, sut and phono stage.
