Hello, I’m in need of some advice. My setup consists of a Supernait 3 with HiCap DR, Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor speakers, and a Mac Mini as the source for Qobuz. The whole system sounds really good.
I have the opportunity to purchase a non-DR Supercap at a very good price, with the future goal of upgrading the preamp section with a 282.
I’d like to know if it’s possible to connect the Supercap to the Supernait 3, and whether I would get any real benefit from doing so.
Yes you can.
You can also power a 282 with a hicap or with a supernait by itself.
In your situation: go for a 282 (and a snaic 4 cable).
A supercap is mandatory for a 252.
When powering a Supernait from a Supercap you will only use 1 of the Supercap dual rails which is the equivalent of a Hi-Cap. Therefore you would effectively be moving from a Hi-Cap DR to a Hi-Cap non-DR which you may consider a downgrade until you get the 282 and 2 Snaics. I think the approach suggested by @robert_h would be better. @Svetty is also correct that if you intend to move on the Hi-Cap-DR the new owner would expect the Snaic to be included so you will need 1 Snaic for the supernait and 2 for the 282.
Thank you for your input and explanations — everything was very clear and made a lot of sense. I was planning to go ahead with the purchase, since, as I mentioned, the unit is being offered at a really good price. But maybe it’s better to wait and go for a 282.
As suggested above, a 282 used with your existing Hicap DR, and with the SN3 as a power amp, could be a good move.
Out of interest, you mention the Mac Mini as a source. Is this the only source and are you using a DAC between Mac and SN3 at the moment? If so you may want to consider improvements here first so that changes downstream don’t expose the limitations of the source.
I believe it, but maybe I’m not ready to see the two series mixed… from a strictly economic point of view, it would make sense considering the price differences.
That would probably make the most sense, and instead of getting a SuperCap I would rather get another HiCapDR when the time comes, which will allow you to feed the 282 with a dedicated power supply per channel, as opposed to a shared configuration with the SuperCap.
