Switch - a confession and a question

you could try wifi to rule out cables

If it is earthed. The isolation property you are addressing is common mode currents passing through cables looking for the lowest impedance to ground… which you don’t normally want to be your streamer

Can you tell me how to swap over the WiFi for the music feed from the streamer? I have forgotten…

Here is a link to Naim’s Network Troubleshooting page.

For Naim owners worried about using none categorised Ethernet cable, for whatever reason.
Naim don’t specify that categorised cable needs to be used.
And, they don’t appear to advise that a switch should be used.

The ideal network configuration for a Naim streaming product is for the streamer to be connected directly to the WiFi router via Ethernet cable,

According to that, I have the ideal connection now. I am trying turning everything off and then back on again. If that doesn’t help, I will try to remember/ look up how to switch from cable to WiFi.

If I can do that, I should know whether I have a problem with the cable from router to streamer or whether the streamer itself has an issue.

Once I have ansers to all that, I can look again at whether or not a better switch (like the Cisco or EE options mentioned here) will be better than no switch at all.

You need to disconnect the Ethernet cable first, then go in to settings / network settings / network setup, it’s fairly intuitive from there

A quick call to the Naim help number led to the discovery that I had the right method for switching to wifi-only operation, but needed more patience with time lags.

Music is now playing without a glitch. This strongly implies that:-
A. There is nothing wrong with the NDX2, but the plug on the end of the ethernet cable from the router is the likely cause of my glitch.

B. With that cable now being suspect, all recent comparisons of direct wire connection versus using a switch must be discarded - the problem on the cable that is now evident may have been having a more minor effect for some time without my noticing.

So I will get the cable fixed and then revisit the switch/ no switch experiments only when everything else is A1. I will certainly try the TP-link switch that I already have, but I may well try a Cisco 2960 or EE option too.

Go for the 16, it’s miles better than the 8.

Is it me, or does that not make any sense at all. If you’re connecting via Ethernet, why does it matter if one’s router provides WiFi ?

If using the Naim app wouldn’t that need to connect to the streamer via a WiFi router?

Not necessarily. For one could connect ones phone to Ethernet, although that would be a highly unusual setup. But to connect to each other, they don’t need to be connected to the same device (or even network, although that’s not supported by Naim).

I don’t have a WiFi router. My router only does Ethernet, it connects to a central switch to which my WiFi access points are connected and are powered by. The switch my Naim streamer is connected to is also connected to that switch. So there’s always two devices in between. Everything works fine, neither my phone nor streamer know or care how many devices are in between. If they had to be connected to the same device (not that I think they could enforce that technically), it would make it unusable to a lot of people.

The recommendation was to connect the streamer directly to the router, which means no WiFi enabled switches in between. So presumably a WiFi router would be required.

Looking back. Naim state it is the ideal network configuration, not the only configuration.

I think they just mean router and perhaps assume that for most people that will also be the (only?) WiFi access point. Otherwise it really doesn’t make much sense.

WiFi enabled switches aren’t really a thing as far as I’m aware, but the reverse does happen, so perhaps that’s semantics. FWIW, my switches are just switches and my APs are just APs.

Naim use simplified language… I remember a few years back helping with some of the earlier FAQs… but in connecting to a domestic broadband router.. you are in fact connecting to the router switch ports.. (though most consumers simply refer that as the ā€˜router’) … depending on your home network layout you may need another switch… it’s irrelevant with respect to the operability of the Naim streamer.
What they are saying is that they are not specifically recommending any special addition or audiophile type switch for optimum performance. They also suggest direct Ethernet connections to a switch port… wherever that is or use WLAN

This is the third time I’ve had to read this post.
Can you please make your next edit the last.

lol… posting from an iPad…

They do seem to fly under the radar. I decided they were worth a try because although not cheap they are not silly money. I first bought one to connect a wireless bridge to my server replacing an Audioquest Cinnamon. It delivered a quite dramatic improvement. So much so that I hesitated about buying a second to add between my sever and streamer. When I eventually did I was very pleasantly surprised at the further improvement.

I’ve got a third which is currently on my Nova. I’m not sure it’s making so much of an improvement there but I haven’t listened really seriously.

I’ve also recently bought a pair of their Peak XLR interconnects and been very impressed with those too.
