Switch off during the heat

I am going to switch of my everything during the heat. Here is my thoughts:

  1. It will not take long to get back up to temperature.

  2. It well save the caps drying out.

  3. Sane some electricity too.

Am I missing anything?

Yes, it’s entirely unnecessary. The rest of the world manages fine with a bit of heat and hi-if gear. We cool our house to 25°C in summer.

It will save a bit of electricity that’s all - but not much in reality. As for the caps drying out, do they dry out in hot weather? Not something I’ve ever seen mentioned and there are plenty of places far hotter than the UK even in the current heat wave. As for not taking long to get back up to temperature well I don’t think it really works like that, ie. dependant on the ambient temperature. I would expect it to take the same time as it usually does to come back on song after switch off.

So all in all, switch off if you want to by all means but you won’t be achieving anything worthwhile.

We have central A/C keeping things reasonably cool and dry. No need to switch everything off. I do unplug everything from the wall when we get summer thunderstorms.

Also thought that I will switch it of the weekend when 36c coming. And it’s very warm under the roof.

Installed 2 fans which cool from the side. So far it has been effective - cases cool down. And in warm environment system sounds so nice.

There will likely be a lot of thunder and lightning (god damn it’s so exciting- as Philip sang) so I’ve just done the same and will plug in again most likely Saturday or Sunday when more normal weather returns.

In an Australian summer, we can get 15+ consecutive days above 35C sometimes in that period we get 42-44C for multiple days.

So I am mindful to ensure all my naim gear get good clear airflow.

We also have central ducted air conditioning, a must-have “downunder”.

So on those 40C days I usually balance the AC temperature control so that the AC consumes 7kWh , the ideal limit of my 9kW solar panels generated without having to import. This comfortably cools my house 10C below the outside temperature.

Amongst all this - my naim 250 and HC cases never feel more than hand-warm.

My 250 Hc are now 44yrs old and and still sounding awesome.

You’re joking right? Mine is 27c with the AC turn on. 25 is just like normal comfortable temperature. I wouldn’t even notice the temp one way or another at 25c

I might turn the hifi off in a heatwave, not because of the hifi but because I will not be able to concentrate. Either the room is too hot or the AC is too loud.

my listening room has been at 34.5 degrees - everything turned off.

Partly because when I bought my CD NAIM replaced the mechanism and it definitely was playing up more in the higher temperatures…..

I’ve turned all the spare kit permanently off, I normally have each room on a timer for a couple of hours. Temps have been unusually high here and for an extended period,now day 7 of 38-41 degrees. The unplugged kit is still all warm to the touch. I guess this is due to body temp being 37 degrees and the kit being above that? Whether unplugging it makes any difference to the internals I have no idea but it seems the right thing to do. I am going to revolve 3 turntables later just to ensure lube is not drying out on the shafts.

I will switch it all on this evening and see if it quickly gets back to top sound.

I will switch off again tonight.

I turn it off when thunderstorms are coming but normally (is the currently normal?) I use the fan(s) to cool it down and keep it switched on.
The 500 takes long to be back again. And this is not different when it’s warmer outside.

Woodwork 29.7- 30.0
Unplugged Naim 33.7
Working Naim 35.8 and 34.7
Loudspeakers 30.0 both for cabinet and fabric grilles

I may try again this evening after everything has had a full day warming up, but there is a slight breeze today.

Not sure 3 is really a things for a short time

I turned mine off a few days back saving >70Watts of heat in a now 27 degree room. Then again I went to a barn dance last night when it was 32 degrees :hot_face:

We had the rumble of thunder this morning about 3:30am which caused me to raise an eyelid and think hifi.

Unfortunately the eyelid shut again until ‘getting up time’.

All OK, thankfully.

I understand that caps do dry out faster in hot weather. However switching everything on is also stressful too!
