SYNERGY - what’s your thoughts?

A wiring loom typically does not infer anything other than a bundled collection of loose wires or cables bundled for physical protection. Any additional arrangement to bundle them in a specific sequence to protest from electrical interaction is merely the secondary requirement.

I’m not following your case. Although I have no doubt that you follow your own drift :innocent:

I can also entertain the belief - blasphemously- That you could just spend a nice sum on items just thrown together willynilly picked out from a hat….
Then “learn” how to love the sound of music and appreciate how the Hills are alive.

Yep, bundled together, usually bound or tied in some way. Speaker cables snd interconnects are usually kept apart, so not a loom! (That was my point in an earlier post)

I think you’re describing the audio(phile) variant of this

Stockholm syndrome is a disputed disorder in pop psychology characterized by the tendency of hostages to develop a psychological bond with their captors. It is named after an attempted bank robbery in 1973, in Stockholm.

I’ve heard one or two systems in my time that appeared to break all the rules, source first etc. but which nevertheless sounded really superb. This seems somehow to happen just by chance, in unique circumstances, when the stars just happen to align perfectly as it were. I’m sure if you set out to assemble such a system it would fall flat - the magic just wouldn’t happen.

I share the same view.

In my opinion, loudspeakers account for around 70% of a hi-fi system’s overall sound quality.

In a sense, speakers are also the weakest link in the chain.

They are the component where distortion levels are by far the highest, often several orders of magnitude greater than those of the source, DAC, preamplifier or power amplifier.

That is precisely why loudspeaker choice/quality, positioning and room integration have such a profound impact on the final result.

When you change /add any boxes, cables , power cords etc in a system , they will directly alter the way the speakers sound as to what new additions /change you originally had. So in this case, isn’t speakers behave or take command from any boxes /cables etc before tem(speakers) ?

Believe it or not it’s the room that can contribute up to 70% of what we hear. It’s huge. Far, far more than any cable or even component can do, if untreated. Start there if you can (!) and the rewards would likely be far greater than spending loads on accessories (cables). Those are the dot on the ‘i’ at best.

Short of that I agree it’s speakers.

I am unfortunate as in I have a relatively problematic listening room with no real possibility of treating it so have to rely on rudimentary room correction/DSP and careful choice of speakers. A move later this year will hopefully solve this.

Speakers certainly determine much of the overall character of the sound. But as far as musical coherence goes, that comes primarily from a good source and then from amplification. It’s not possible to achieve it with speakers if it’s lacking earlier in the chain, however capable they are. So source first still applies. But certainly choosing speakers that suit you and your room first, and then working back from those to a good source and amplification makes a lot of sense.

I would say how the speakers sound on the end will very much depend on what’s before them .
For eg., I heard the same pair of speakers- marten Coltrane statement edition - 1st time w vitus amp together w MSB at my dealer, the 2nd time was with rega amp. Totally sound so different . hence my beliefs ..

And , right Pairing will lead to synergy ….

The same can be said the other way around, if the speaker/room interaction is not good enough to reveal the capabilities of the source, no amount of “source first” will make a difference.

Yes, both are relevant, but then that’s not synergy, that’s bad choices being made.

The sound is neither speakers, neither amp, it’s speakers with amp and room.
As said above, a Magico into Nait5 has nothing in common vs Magico with Boulder monos for example.

Of course speakers are affected by anything in the replay chain before them, but they imprint more of a character stamp on the overall sound than any other component, at keast that is my experience in over 50 years of involvement with hifi. Getting speakers that suit the person in my view is key to maximising contentment.

The room of course can modify the sound to a huge degree, but it does so starting with the speaker’s character, and a bad room won’t make the sound of a poor speaker sound good, though it can make a good sound bad.

Indeed, when it comes to information, the weakest link in the replay chain limits the whole chain (as indeed does distortion). But agreeable sound character, primarily the province of speakers, in my view is more important for contentment than the detail within the music, thogh that of course is also important, albeit more so to some people than others.

Synergy with your own Ears, Music preferences and of course listening habits are equally important.
Synergies would be naturally instinctive to figure out and recognise if one had a large music collection and a few miles under the belt.

Those who are new to the game would be better off having both open ears and mind.
Who perhaps are more susceptible to “Throwing” things together without recourse to the right research and more importantly an accessible dealer to help.
For these folk “Synergy” could be both a mysterious and daunting concept known to those select few in the knowledge.
It could of course be an artefact of cognition hoisted up by repetition :innocent:
Not that I wish to debunk eons of wisdom from our collective - more an entry point for some as an essential and fundamental - yet more so a personal one to determine what synergy is.

Not forgetting that Synergy is essentially an Artistic/Aesthetic concept that’s learnt. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
No one would ever expect synergy handed to them on a plate.
